00:08moments in One Piece.

00:21The Krieg Pirates' attack on the floating restaurant Barati sees even the tough cooks

00:26who work there hard-pressed to combat Don Krieg.

00:29With gadgets and deadly weapons galore, Krieg seems untouchable, at least until Luffy charges

00:35straight at him.

00:36Krieg throws bombs and spiked ammunition at him, but that doesn't deter Luffy in the

00:41slightest.

00:43Krieg even whips out a cloak of spikes, but Luffy doesn't hesitate to punch him, even

00:48if it hurts him badly.

00:56It's a fantastic character moment, illustrating Luffy's unwavering determination, even if

01:01we wince every time we see his punch land.

01:19Ace dying was always a possibility, given that the Summit War was fought to prevent

01:24his execution, but watching it happen is still brutal.

01:28While Ace is initially rescued, some taunting from Akainu causes him to delay his escape.

01:34With his fire no match for Akainu's magma, Ace is overmatched.

01:39Even so, when Akainu targets Luffy, Ace steps in the way, taking Akainu's magma fist right

01:45through his torso.

01:51Sure, the fire obscures things a bit, but Ace still gets impaled.

01:56The death of a character is always a gut punch, but few are quite as literal as this one.

02:16Trafalgar Law has one of the most brutal backstories in One Piece.

02:20In this country, Flevance suffered a widespread disaster when amber lead poisoned the inhabitants

02:25over multiple generations.

02:28The rapid onset of symptoms made others believe it to be a disease, leading to a war that

02:33led to most of the country's citizens being killed, including Law's family.

02:38Along with suffering a mental breakdown, Law is forced to escape the massacre by hiding

02:43among corpses to escape the country.

02:46And Law is around 10 years old when this happens.

02:49It is heartbreaking to think of anyone enduring all of that, much less a child.

03:00The Don Quixote Family is Strung Up

03:09Speaking of horrific backstories, One Piece villains get a few of their own.

03:14Doflamingo's dad decides that he and his family are going to stop being world nobles

03:19and go to live among regular people.

03:22Unfortunately, he underestimates just how much the citizens despise the world nobles

03:27for lording over, enslaving, and generally mistreating them for centuries.

03:32Doflamingo, his brother, and his dad are all strung up and tortured over a wall of fire.

03:43While we certainly don't condone everything the world nobles have done, doing this to

03:48children is downright sickening.

04:01Number 6.

04:02Nami Stabs Herself

04:08The Straw Hats navigator is put through the wringer when she returns to her hometown.

04:13Having been forced to work for her mother's killer, Arlong, for years, Nami hoped to use

04:18her savings to purchase freedom for her village and herself.

04:22However, Arlong double-crosses her and has a corrupt marine confiscate her money.

04:32Overcome with fury and despair, Nami takes out her frustration on the only piece of Arlong

04:37within reach, the tattoo on her arm.

04:40It's heartbreaking and grisly to watch Nami repeatedly stab herself.

04:45Thankfully, Luffy interrupts Nami's impromptu tattoo removal with an epic promise to help.

04:55Number 5.

04:56Oden is Boiled

05:05Ryuzaki Oden endures a lot of punishing challenges in his legendary life, but his final hour

05:11is the most excruciating.

05:13After he and his retainers are sentenced to death, Oden makes a deal.

05:17Whoever survives being boiled alive, like his namesake food, for an hour, gets to go

05:23free.

05:24And while it's tremendously badass that Oden endures all that time while lifting his

05:28men over his head, it's still brutal.

05:41Anyone besides Oden would have had a grisly end.

05:44Oden was born to boil, but taking the expression literally is a grotesque final indignity.

05:56Number 4.

06:05Whitebeard Loses Face

06:17The world's strongest man incurs many wounds during the battle at Marineford, but the most

06:21grievous ones are from Admiral Akainu.

06:24Enraged by the death of Ace, Whitebeard mercilessly attacks his adopted son's killer.

06:30Amid all the quake punches, Akainu gives as good as he gets.

06:34In the anime, Whitebeard merely loses half of his epic facial hair.

06:38However, in the manga, Akainu burns away half of Whitebeard's face.

06:43Sometimes the series just gets too graphic for the anime, and this is one of the gnarliest

06:48injuries a character receives.

06:50Speaking of which…

06:59Number 3.

07:00Zef's Sacrifice for Sanji

07:11Sanji is another character whose backstory goes dark.

07:14The Straw Hats cook was stranded along with his future mentor Zef, a cook slash pirate,

07:20on a small rocket sea.

07:31Sanji endures months of hunger with only a bag of food given to him by Zef.

07:36When he's unable to take it any longer, he tries to take Zef's food, only to find

07:41out that Zef has only treasure.

07:44He gave all the food to Sanji.

07:46Also, Zef is now missing a leg.

07:49Although the anime initially shied away from the implication that Zef ate his own leg,

07:54the manga and later adaptations have made the self-cannibalism all too clear.

08:07Lin-Lin's Birthday Tea Party

08:14Big Mom wasn't always large or apparent.

08:17When Charlotte Lin-Lin was just a child, she still had a monumental appetite and monstrous

08:22strength.

08:23After her foster mother, Caramel, relocates Lin-Lin and the rest of the orphans of Sheep's

08:28House, Lin-Lin is treated to a birthday tea party with her favourite food.

08:33However, in her frenzy to devour it all, Lin-Lin not only takes a bite out of the table, but

08:39she's shocked to find that Mother Caramel and her friends are all mysteriously missing.

08:51And she can now use Caramel's devil fruit ability.

08:55Lin-Lin might be confused about what happened, but we're not.

09:30Number 1.

09:31Ohara Genocide

09:39Robin's backstory is among the most gut-wrenching in the series.

09:43The world government has outlawed the study of a certain period of history.

09:47When they discover the scholars of Ohara have defied the law, they don't just kill all

09:52the scholars, they kill everyone on the island.

09:56Men, women, children.

09:58They take no chances about anyone escaping.

10:01Only Robin survives out of the mercy of one Marine.

10:17But even then, everyone Robin has ever known is murdered to hide the truth.

10:22It's a heinous act ripped straight from the very worst of real world history.
