Hey kids, and thanks for joining me today.
00:05
As soon as I learn about math mountains, I will be allowed to join the math mountain
00:09
race.
00:10
I am so excited to join the race!
00:14
Can you help me learn about what they call a math mountain?
00:17
Awesome!
00:19
We are going to have so much fun!
00:23
Here we have what is called a math mountain.
00:25
You can see that the two lines that meet up make a mountain.
00:29
To understand a math mountain, it is good to know what each of these parts mean.
00:35
We have three parts here.
00:37
The top part of the mountain is called the total.
00:40
It is also called the sum as well.
00:43
The two parts on the bottom of the mountain are called addends.
00:47
Another name given to them is partners, but it is the same thing.
00:51
The sum always gets put on the top.
00:54
The sum gets separated or divided into two parts which are the addends.
01:00
Now that we have covered the names, let's take a look at how to use a math mountain.
01:06
Here we have a math mountain with 15 as the sum.
01:09
The left addend is 5, and the right addend is 10.
01:14
In a math mountain, both addends added together will give you the sum.
01:18
This is important to understand, so let me say that again.
01:22
In a math mountain, both addends added together will give you the total.
01:29
So if I put a plus sign between these two addends and add them together, we should get
01:34
the sum.
01:36
Can you tell me what 5 plus 10 is?
01:43
It is 15!
01:45
Great job!
01:46
Now you are getting the hang of it!
01:48
What we just did was awesome!
01:50
We made an equation from the information in the math mountain.
01:54
We said in our equation that 5 plus 10 equals the sum, which is 15.
02:00
This math mountain also works another way.
02:05
Here we see a minus sign, which means to subtract.
02:08
We can start from the sum and subtract one of the addends to get the other addend.
02:14
Let me show you what I mean.
02:16
We start this time with 15, and we subtract the addend on the left.
02:21
What number is the addend on the left?
02:25
You're right, the addend on the left is 5.
02:28
So in our equation, we have the total, which is 15, subtract the addend on the left, which
02:34
is 5, and then we have our equal sign.
02:38
What is 15 subtract 5?
02:43
The answer is 10!
02:45
Great job!
02:46
10 is the same number as the addend on the right.
02:50
So if you start with the total, you can slide down the math mountain by subtracting one
02:54
of the addends, and this will give you the other addend.
02:58
You guys are really getting this!
02:59
This is amazing!
03:00
Great job, guys!
