00:19We are going to have so much fun!
00:23Here we have what is called a math mountain.
00:25You can see that the two lines that meet up make a mountain.
00:29To understand a math mountain, it is good to know what each of these parts mean.
00:35We have three parts here.
00:37The top part of the mountain is called the total.
00:40It is also called the sum as well.
00:43The two parts on the bottom of the mountain are called addends.
00:47Another name given to them is partners, but it is the same thing.
00:51The sum always gets put on the top.
00:54The sum gets separated or divided into two parts which are the addends.
01:00Now that we have covered the names, let's take a look at how to use a math mountain.
01:06Here we have a math mountain with 15 as the sum.
01:09The left addend is 5, and the right addend is 10.
01:14In a math mountain, both addends added together will give you the sum.
01:18This is important to understand, so let me say that again.
01:22In a math mountain, both addends added together will give you the total.
01:29So if I put a plus sign between these two addends and add them together, we should get
01:34the sum.
01:36Can you tell me what 5 plus 10 is?
01:43It is 15!

01:50We made an equation from the information in the math mountain.
01:54We said in our equation that 5 plus 10 equals the sum, which is 15.

02:05Here we see a minus sign, which means to subtract.
02:08We can start from the sum and subtract one of the addends to get the other addend.
02:14Let me show you what I mean.
02:16We start this time with 15, and we subtract the addend on the left.
02:21What number is the addend on the left?
02:25You're right, the addend on the left is 5.
02:28So in our equation, we have the total, which is 15, subtract the addend on the left, which
02:34is 5, and then we have our equal sign.
02:38What is 15 subtract 5?
02:43The answer is 10!

02:4610 is the same number as the addend on the right.
02:50So if you start with the total, you can slide down the math mountain by subtracting one
02:54of the addends, and this will give you the other addend.
