00:08Coaching is a great way to get involved in the rugby family, whether you're a mum or
00:12dad, an ex-player, a student, or if you're completely new to our sport, there'll be a
00:17place for you all.
00:19The Welsh Rugby Union appreciates the time and commitment that's given to support the
00:23game, and to underpin this, the coaching department offers many opportunities to develop skills
00:28in a safe and positive learning environment.
00:32Aligned to the coach and referee framework, the coaching pathway is made up of various
00:37formal, informal and digital learning opportunities to support the coach throughout their development.
00:44The first formal course that supports our players is for those coaching under 7s and
00:49under 8s, and is called the Tag Award.
00:51It's a three-hour course that will take the learner through practical elements of the
00:55game, like passing, catching and evasive running, and help to develop fun and enjoyment
01:00in their sessions in a safe environment.
01:03It's imperative that coaches attend this course if they are coaching at this age group,
01:07even if they have any of our other qualifications.
01:11This course is supported by appropriate coaches' corners, where coaches who coach at the same
01:16age get the chance to share their coaching experiences.
01:19In addition, there are also continuous coach development opportunities that are delivered
01:24all around the regions by our Welsh Rugby Union educators.
01:29The next formal stop on the journey is a course for those coaching under 9 to under 11 players.
01:35This course will develop the coach's knowledge and understanding of the techniques of safe
01:39tackling and the context of the ball after the tackle has been made, which is aligned
01:44to our player pathway.
01:46A key element of the course is the development of the parent, player and coach triangle,
01:51and all the social skills and behaviours you will need to be aware of whilst coaching
01:55at this level.
01:56Coaching through games is a concept that underpins the development of our players, and how to
02:00adopt this approach helps players become more proficient at the development of their skills
02:05through decision making.
02:07Within this course, we've developed a referee module, which will give the necessary skills
02:11to referee within this age bracket.
02:14It's required that you attend this course if you are coaching at this age group.
02:19Again, this course is supported by our informal learning opportunities, coaches' corners
02:23and continuous coach development.
02:26Our third stop on the coaching journey, which is the last stop where a coach can enter the
02:30pathway, is for those coaching from under 12 to senior level.
02:34The Level 1 course is 12 hours in duration, with a mixture of theory and practice modules.
02:40This course builds on the fundamentals of the game, like decision making, the scrum
02:45and line out, and develops the how to coach skills using techniques such as questioning
02:50and listening.
02:51These are key skills that are essential for building confidence and self-esteem in players,
02:56and enhancing the enjoyment of the game.
02:59All coaches that are coaching at these age groups must gain this qualification for the
03:03safety and development of our players.
03:06Remember, there are additional informal learning opportunities, such as coaching insights,
03:11to supplement the coaches' corners and continuous coach development at this level.
03:16You must have achieved the Level 1 qualification to progress on to Level 2.
03:21The fourth stop is the Level 2 course for those coaching under 14 upwards, and this
03:25is a 24-hour course delivered over a series of days.
03:29The course is based on the technical and tactical elements of the game.
03:33Planning and organisation is a big part of the course as well, as well as developing
03:37session plans over a set period.
03:39This course is a must for coaches that will enhance their knowledge for their players
03:43to develop in line with the demands of the ever-changing game.
03:47More holistic, informal coach development opportunities through workshops and corners
03:51have been formulated to assist coaches in their development.
03:56The final stop on the community coaching journey is the Level 3 course, also known as the Advanced
04:01Coaching Programme, and it's for coaches who have invested time in their coaching.
04:06The course can be accessed through an application process.
04:09It's aimed at all coaches, but especially those moving towards performance coaching
04:13or coaching in our player pathway.
04:16The course is spread over one year, while you'll be assigned a mentor for the duration.
04:21The content builds on the knowledge that the coaches have already gained over the years,
04:25and the key modules are self and people, learning environments, reflection, planning, craft
04:32and technical and tactical elements of the game.
04:35On completion of the course, candidates gain access to the Coaching Performance section
04:39of the Game Locker to continue their development.
04:43Finally, the Welsh Rugby Union actively promotes that all coaches should be continuous learners
04:48and offer further assistance to their development via the WIU Game Locker.
04:53Coaches can access an additional Positive Behaviour section, which houses our coaches'
04:58Code of Conduct and other resources.
05:02Whatever level you're coaching at, there are opportunities to develop and be supported,
05:06and we look forward to seeing you at one of these learning experiences.
