With shoplifting being on the rise through the cost of living crisis, seeing many people struggle, we ask if those stealing things they need should face lighter punishment?

00:00You cannot have a blanket answer for that. It may depend on the case-to-case.
00:06Maybe there will be some genuine cases which are not criminal by nature,
00:10it's just their need is there. And there may be some groups,
00:14they are hiding in the name of being needy.
00:19So everything requires a little investigation.
00:22It's just a shame that people are doing that.
00:24I mean, I was in a coffee shop along here, having coffee,
00:28and people walked in and took the sandwiches and drinks and just walked out.
00:35Yeah, if prices are better, and inflation is better, people won't steal.
00:41That's what I think.
00:43I don't think they should be allowed to do it, but I can understand why they might have to do it.
00:47If they can't afford to buy food to live.
00:52I mean, I wouldn't condone people shoplifting expensive things to sell.
00:58That's not the right thing, is it?
