00:04and welcome to today's video where we're just going to give you a bit of information about

00:09Scott Mills.

00:19and in today's video we're going to be talking about something which will certainly get a

00:24lot of people's kind of like nostalgia muscle flexing and that is Tokyo Joes.

00:29The legendary nightclub just remembered by countless people in Preston as the go-to spot.

00:36Legendary in every sense of the word.

00:38Now recently I was at BBC Radio 2 in the park, if I can get my words out, and I was speaking

00:44to the BBC Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills and we were asking him about Preston, what it was like

00:50to be performing in Preston, whether he'd been to Preston before and he does have quite

00:54a lot of links to Preston.

00:56He was explaining how one of his best mates met his wife at UCLan back in the day and

01:01they'd been up visiting since then, but also one of the key links he has to Preston as

01:06a city is the fact that he used to DJ at Tokyo Joes and immediately, as soon as we were asking

01:12him whether he'd worked in Preston before, straight away he was like Tokyo Joes, legendary

01:16club, I used to DJ there, great time, incredible nights, brilliant parties, awesome crowds

01:22and he could not have been more praiseworthy of what an awesome venue it was.

01:27So we thought, what better way to celebrate that than to put together a bit of an article

01:32with some of our best retro archive pictures of Tokyo Joes back in the day, those old school

01:37party people, probably those guys' parents now, whatever they might be, give them a good

01:42chance to look back at what their misspent youth looked like, but also we're letting

01:47you know what Scott himself said, so yeah, this is a bit of an interview with Scott Mills

02:00I actually have been to Preston more than you would think because I've DJed here loads,

02:08Tokyo Joes back in the day, legendary, actually as I got off the train some guy who obviously

02:17works for the railways was like, I booked you for Tokyo Joes, he used to be the manager

02:24and now he works at the train station, he works for like Avanti or whatever, but he

02:28was like, do you remember? And I was like, yeah I do. And then also, my best best mate,

02:33who was also my best man at my wedding, went to uni in Preston and this is where he met

02:40his, when they were at uni he met his now wife, they were at uni together in Preston,

02:48so they were here yesterday and it's the first time they've been back since they met, so

02:52it's really cute, really cute. The first thing that you really notice is everyone, everyone

02:59is friendly, really friendly and everyone loves a chat and I think that you're so used

03:05to, we're so used to being in London where everyone's like a bit head down, like tunnel

03:12vision, got to get somewhere, blah blah blah, and like everyone just chats to you, like

03:16in the bar or the hotel last night, people, it wasn't like they wanted a photo or anything,

03:21they just fancy chatting and that is the first thing I notice. Do you find that quite refreshing?

03:26Yeah I like it, I do like it a lot. It's friendly, it's much more friendly. I've got to ask more

03:30about Tokyo Joes, so when you're playing there, what are your standout memories of the club

03:34Oh my god, legendary, I think it was definitely a student night, I also think that they did

03:42a thing which you wouldn't do now called free to pee, free to you pee, that's what I remember.

03:48Did that happen? Did I make that up? Where the drinks, hang on, this is my memory, the

03:54drinks were free until someone, everyone was trying to not go to the toilet, wow, probably

04:01wouldn't do that now would you, but that's, it really stands out in my memory. That's

04:06the kind of memory that I'll stand out. That, and for some reason I remember like, didn't

04:11they put like tin foil or something on the, to stop people getting into the loo and you

04:16had to break through it or something, I can't remember. Anyway, it was, I know, the first

04:21person who broke the tin foil, that's it, that's it, I remember there was tin foil involved,

04:26but I know that in Preston that club was legendary, when did it close?

04:33Do you know about the fire? No, there was a fire, there is no Tokyo Dose now,

04:37no I hear that, yeah, it is just a car park, sad times.

04:42Do you think you'll come back to Preston? Sure, yeah, open another nightclub and I'll be there.
