Hey kids, welcome to shape practice.
00:15
Today we are going to learn about shapes.
00:18
Let's take a look at some of these shapes.
00:23
You may recognize some of these shapes, but others you may not know.
00:27
Each shape has attributes that set them apart from other shapes.
00:31
Learning these can help us know which shape is which.
00:35
So let's take a closer look.
00:42
Here we have a triangle.
00:43
But what makes this shape a triangle?
00:48
For a shape to be a triangle, it must have three sides and three angles.
00:53
This shape has one, two, three sides.
00:59
Okay it has three sides, but does it have three angles?
01:03
Well the angle is where two straight sides join together.
01:08
Sometimes the angles are called corners.
01:11
We can see that this triangle has one, two, three angles.
01:16
So this shape is a triangle because it has three sides and three angles.
01:20
Now how about this shape?
01:25
It looks a lot like the other shape, but it's more squished.
01:29
Is this still a triangle?
01:33
Well let's count the sides and angles and see what it is.
01:37
Okay we have one, two, three sides, and one, two, three angles.
01:43
Three sides and three angles.
01:45
That means that it IS a triangle.
01:48
Great job guys!
01:49
Okay let's look at some more shapes.
01:55
Now we're going to look at quadrilaterals.
01:57
A quadrilateral is any shape that has four sides and four angles.
02:03
Many shapes can fit the attributes of a quadrilateral.
02:07
Here are a couple quadrilaterals.
02:10
Let's learn the names of these shapes.
02:12
The first shape is called a square.
02:15
The next shape is called a rectangle.
02:18
What is this next shape?
02:22
Great job!
02:23
This is a square just like the other one.
02:25
What is this last shape called?
02:29
You got it!
02:30
This is another rectangle.
02:33
All of these shapes are quadrilaterals because they have four sides and four angles.
02:39
Wow!
02:41
These shapes have a lot of sides and angles.
02:44
Let's count how many sides are on this shape.
02:47
There's one, two, three, four, five.
02:52
How many angles do you see?
02:55
Five!
02:57
It has five angles!
02:59
A shape that has five sides and five angles is called a pentagon.
03:03
There are so many different shapes that can make a pentagon.
03:06
It's really awesome guys!
03:07
Go home and draw some!
03:11
Now let's look at this shape here.
03:13
It's another shape with a lot of sides and angles.
03:16
How many sides and angles can you see?
03:26
Let's count them!
03:27
One, two, three, four, five, six sides and one, two, three, four, five, six angles.
03:35
Wow!
03:36
That's a lot!
03:37
A shape with six sides and six angles is called a hexagon.
03:43
You can draw all of these shapes by counting sides and angles.
03:48
Great job again!
03:49
You guys are awesome!
03:50
But how are we going to remember all these shape names?
03:53
We've learned so many!
03:55
Let's make a list to help us remember everything we've learned.
03:58
Here we have a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, and a hexagon.
04:06
Tri- means three.
04:08
That's why a triangle has three sides and three angles.
04:13
The word quad- means four.
04:15
That's why a quadrilateral has four sides and four angles.
04:21
Pent- means five, which is why a pentagon has five sides and five angles.
04:27
And hex- means six, so it has six sides and six angles.
04:33
That's a lot to remember!
04:35
Thanks for learning shapes with me today guys!
04:37
It's been awesome!
04:38
We'll see you next time!
