People would know Baxter College for its family feel to it. We're a proper community where
00:23
we respect each other. We want to instil an element of trust, so that's part of that community,
00:29
making sure that they trust us. Good teachers, first and foremost, are dedicated to the kids
00:38
in their classrooms, so the decisions that they make are ones that support the child
00:42
and help them learn in an engaging way. When we think about our favourite teachers at school,
00:46
they were the ones that really understood what we needed and what we wanted and knew
00:51
us as people, and I think that's really important. We have boundaries, so we know when to get
00:57
our heads down and work, and we know when it's time to be serious, but then we can have a joke.
01:01
It's got a different environment in the classroom, and I think it's a better working space.
01:05
The skills that they develop in those creative subjects are really key, so the ability to
01:14
develop their confidence, to express an element of freedom, whether that's through movement,
01:21
whether it's through spoken word, art, dance, whatever it is, that's really important,
01:27
so students have an outlet and an opportunity to shine.
01:30
We know that PE is an important part of a child's mental health, so being physically
01:38
active is really important to them, but also that sense of achievement they'll get from being in a
01:43
competitive situation is really important, and how they deal with the emotions of being
01:47
disappointed when they don't win, that's just a natural part of life, so I think sport is
01:52
actually quite good training for how you'll deal with many aspects.
01:57
So we have something called the Baxter Way, which is driven through our values.
02:01
So first it's about brilliance, accountable, trust, excellence, routines, engage, so we want to make
02:07
sure we engage students in their learning so that they are actively engaged, not passively,
02:11
having a go, being resilient.
