00:00Kamala Harris, let's have a good debate.
00:07Have fun.
00:10Welcome to you both.
00:11It's wonderful to have you.
00:12It's an honor to have you both here tonight.
00:13Good evening.
00:14We are looking forward to a spirited and thoughtful debate.
00:17So let's get started.
00:18I want to begin tonight with the issue that voters repeatedly say is their number one
00:21issue, and that is the economy and the cost of living in this country.
00:25Vice President Harris, you and President Trump were elected four years ago, and your opponent
00:29on the stage here tonight often asks his supporters, are you better off than you were
00:34four years ago?
00:35When it comes to the economy, do you believe Americans are better off than they were four
00:38years ago?
00:40So I was raised as a middle class kid, and I am actually the only person on this stage
00:47who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle class and working people of America.
00:51I believe in the ambition, the aspirations, the dreams of the American people.
00:57And that is why I imagine and have actually a plan to build what I call an opportunity
01:02economy, because here's the thing.
01:04We know that we have a shortage of homes and housing, and the cost of housing is too expensive
01:10for far too many people.
01:12We know that young families need support to raise their children, and I intend on extending
01:18a tax cut for those families of $6,000, which is the largest child tax credit that we have
01:24given in a long time, so that those young families can afford to buy a crib, buy a car
01:30seat, buy clothes for their children.
01:32My passion, one of them, is small businesses.
01:36I was actually, my mother raised my sister and me, but there was a woman who helped raise
01:41us.
01:42We call her our second mother.
01:43She was a small business owner.
01:44I love our small businesses.
01:46My plan is to give a $50,000 tax deduction to startup small businesses, knowing they
01:52are part of the backbone of America's economy.
01:55My opponent, on the other hand, his plan is to do what he has done before, which is to
02:00provide a tax cut for billionaires and big corporations, which will result in $5 trillion
02:07to America's deficit.
02:08My opponent has a plan that I call the Trump sales tax, which would be a 20% tax on everyday
02:15goods that you rely on to get through the month.
02:20Economists have said that that Trump sales tax would actually result for middle-class
02:24families in about $4,000 more a year because of his policies and his ideas about what should
02:33be the backs of middle-class people paying for tax cuts for billionaires.
02:39President Trump, I'll give you two minutes.
02:41First of all, I have no sales tax.
02:42That's an incorrect statement.
02:44She knows that.
02:45We're doing tariffs on other countries.
02:47Other countries are going to finally, after 75 years, pay us back for all that we've done
02:52for the world.
02:53And the tariff will be substantial in some cases.
02:57I took in billions and billions of dollars, as you know, from China.
03:00In fact, they never took the tariff off because it was so much money they can't.
03:04It would totally destroy everything that they've set out to do.
03:07They're taking in billions of dollars from China and other places.
03:10They've left the tariffs on.
03:11When I had it, I had tariffs, and yet I had no inflation.
03:15Look, we've had a terrible economy because inflation has, which is really known as a
03:20country buster.
03:21It breaks up countries.
03:22We have inflation like very few people have ever seen before.
03:26Probably the worst in our nation's history.
03:29We were at 21 percent, but that's being generous because many things are 50, 60, 70, and 80
03:34percent higher than they were just a few years ago.
03:37This has been a disaster for people, for the middle class, but for every class.
03:41On top of that, we have millions of people pouring into our country from prisons and
03:46jails, from mental institutions and insane asylums.
03:50And they're coming in and they're taking jobs that are occupied right now by African Americans
03:56and Hispanics and also unions.
03:59Unions are going to be affected very soon.
04:00And you see what's happening.
04:01You see what's happening with towns throughout the United States.
04:04You look at Springfield, Ohio.
04:06You look at Aurora in Colorado.
04:09They are taking over the towns.
04:11They're taking over buildings.
04:12They're going in violently.
04:14These are the people that she and Biden led into our country and they're destroying our
04:20country.
04:21They're dangerous.
04:22They're at the highest level of criminality.
04:25And we have to get them out.
04:26We have to get them out fast.
04:27I created one of the greatest economies in the history of our country.
04:31I'll do it again and even better.
04:33We are going to get to immigration and border security during this debate, but I would like
04:37to let Vice President Harris respond on the economy here.
04:41I would love to.
04:42Let's talk about what Donald Trump left us.
04:46Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression.
04:51Donald Trump left us the worst public health epidemic in a century.
04:57Donald Trump left us the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.
05:05And what we have done is clean up Donald Trump's mess.
05:09What we have done and what I intend to do is build on what we know are the aspirations
05:14and the hopes of the American people.
05:15But I'm going to tell you on this debate tonight, you're going to hear from the same old tired
05:20playbook, a bunch of lies, grievances and name calling.
05:25What you're going to hear tonight is a detailed and dangerous plan called Project 2025 that
05:32the former president intends on implementing if he were elected again.
05:36I believe very strongly that the American people want a president who understands the
05:42importance of bringing us together.
05:44No, we have so much more in common than what separates us.
05:47And I pledge to you to be a president for all Americans.
05:51President Trump will give you a minute here to respond.
05:52Number one, I have nothing to do, as you know, and as she knows better than anyone.
05:56I have nothing to do with Project 2025.
05:59That's out there.
06:00I haven't read it.
06:01I don't want to read it purposely.
06:02I'm not going to read it.
06:04This was a group of people that got together.
06:05They came up with some ideas, I guess, some good, some bad.
06:08But it makes no difference.
06:10I have nothing to do.
06:11Everybody knows I'm an open book.
06:12Everybody knows what I'm going to do.
06:14Cut taxes very substantially and create a great economy like I did before.
06:18We had the greatest economy.
06:20We got hit with a pandemic.
06:21And the pandemic was not since 1917, where 100 million people died.
06:27Has there been anything like it?
06:28We did a phenomenal job with the pandemic.
06:30We handed them over a country where the economy and where the stock market was higher than
06:36it was before the pandemic came in.
06:39Nobody's ever seen anything like it.
06:41We made ventilators for the entire world.
06:43We got gowns.
06:44We got masks.
06:45We did things that nobody thought possible.
06:47And people give me credit for rebuilding the military.
06:50They give me credit for a lot of things, but not enough credit for the great job we did
06:53with the pandemic.
06:55But the only jobs they got were bounce back jobs.
06:57Things with jobs bounce back and it bounced back and it went to their benefit.
07:02But I was the one that created them.
07:03They know it and so does everybody else.
07:05Vice President Harris, I'll let you respond.
07:07So Donald Trump has no plan for you.
07:12And when you look at his economic plan, it's all about tax breaks for the richest people.
07:17I am offering what I describe as an opportunity economy.
07:21And the best economists in our country, if not the world, have reviewed our relative
07:27plans for the future of America.
07:29What Goldman Sachs has said is that Donald Trump's plan would make the economy worse.
07:35Mine would strengthen the economy.
07:37What the Wharton School has said is Donald Trump's plan would actually explode the deficit.
07:4416 Nobel laureates have described his economic plan as something that would increase inflation.
07:50And by the middle of next year would invite a recession.
07:54You just have to look at where we are and where we stand on the issues.
07:58And I'd invite you to know that Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is
08:04more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you.
08:08It's just a sound bite.
08:09They gave her that to say, look, I went to the Wharton School of Finance and many of
08:14those professors, the top professors, think my plan is a brilliant plan.
08:18It's a great plan.
08:19It's a plan that's going to bring up our worth, our value as a country.
08:23It's going to make people want to be able to go and work and create jobs and create
08:27a lot of good, solid money for our company, for our country.
08:32Just to finish off, she doesn't have a plan.
08:36She copied Biden's plan.
08:38And it's like four sentences, like run, spot, run for sentences that are just, oh, we'll
08:45try and lower taxes.
08:46She doesn't have a plan.
08:47Take a look at her plan.
08:48She doesn't have a plan.
