The EU unveils plans for major agricultural reforms with a focus on sustainability and
00:06
targeted support for farmers.
00:11
Budget law and the country's economic outlook are at the top of the agenda of the FDI's
00:17
executive meeting.
00:22
French politicians urge the UK government to take action against migrant deaths.
00:35
After months of intense demonstrations by farmers this past winter and spring, changes
00:39
could be on the horizon for Europe's agricultural sector.
00:43
The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has just published its strategic
00:47
dialogue with key stakeholders on the future of farming, with ideas like shifting how EU
00:52
funds are allocated to farmers by need rather than by size.
00:57
The discussion, spearheaded earlier this year, is seen as essential in bridging the highly
01:01
polarised debate surrounding the Common Agricultural Policy, or CAP.
01:05
The CAP, which accounts for one third of the EU's budget, is now under review.
01:11
The recommendation is to make the CAP fit for purpose.
01:16
This means on the one side enabling for lively rural areas.
01:24
This means, in the second function, income support.
01:30
But as the CAP is public money, this income support should be targeted, much more targeted,
01:38
to those who actually need this support.
01:43
These suggestions are expected to form the basis for the European Commission's new Agriculture
01:48
and Food Proposal, which is set to be released by early 2025.
01:52
Environmental groups like Greenpeace have cautiously welcomed the discussions, calling
01:57
it a step towards sustainability.
01:59
Clearly, if I had to write this, I would write it very differently, but I accept it again
02:06
as a consensus after seven months of very hard work and very tough negotiations.
02:11
So I'm extremely happy to see, for instance, all this group of stakeholders accepting the
02:16
fact that we need to address the negative impacts of livestock farming, not at the expenses
02:22
of farmers.
02:23
We need to help farmers in the transition, but it's clear that we all agree we need to
02:28
tackle the problem of livestock in the areas with very high livestock concentration.
02:35
One key issue raised during last spring's protests was funding the transition to a more
02:40
sustainable agricultural system.
02:43
Farmers, through their main association, Copper Kojeka, were involved in the talks.
02:48
Farmers cannot support on their own the totality of changes.
02:54
Some changes have a cost or make it difficult to operate, because changes are not important.
03:01
The text also calls on the European Commission to ensure greater coherence between its trade
03:14
and sustainability policies.
03:20
The last time Giorgio Meloni's party, Fratelli d'Italia, held an executive meeting at a national
03:25
level attended by the highest ranking figures was in 2022, the year her government took
03:33
office.
03:34
So the timing of this gathering is quite significant.
03:37
According to Fratelli d'Italia's officials, the aim of the meeting was, quote, to assess
03:44
the work that has been done so far and outline the agenda for the coming months.
03:48
Several issues were discussed during the meeting that was introduced by Italy's Prime Minister
03:54
Giorgio Meloni, who's also the party's president.
03:58
Among them was the 2025 budget law, which is considered a key measure of the government's
04:05
political programme.
04:07
The procedure for its approval will begin soon, with the first step being the submission
04:12
of the structural budget plan, providing the framework for the 2025 budget.
04:18
It's too early to get a full and detailed picture of the measure.
04:21
What we do know, as confirmed by Giorgio Meloni, is that the focus will be on tax cuts while
04:25
sustaining businesses and improve the livelihoods of both Italian families and workers.
04:31
We asked a member of Fratelli d'Italia what was discussed during the meeting and what
04:35
the priorities are moving forward.
04:51
But during the meeting, Giorgio Meloni also addressed the controversy making headlines
05:03
in Italy surrounding the country's culture minister, San Giuliano, over claims made by
05:08
Maria Rosaria Boccia regarding her alleged appointment as the minister's adviser.
05:14
Although San Giuliano denied the claims and the use of public funds to pay Boccia, Meloni
05:19
warned that mistakes are not permitted.
05:22
According to a recent poll, the majority of Italians approves Meloni's leadership.
05:26
How her cabinet handles the state's finances will be a key factor in ensuring she will
05:31
complete the government's five-year term.
05:34
Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
05:43
French politicians have been urging the UK government to take action against migrant
05:47
deaths.
05:48
It comes after more people were seen making the dangerous journey across the English Channel,
05:54
only a day after 12 migrants died after a boat carrying over 50 capsized.
05:59
Meanwhile, off the coast of Italy, the Coast Guard rescued seven men from a sinking boat
06:22
that had left from Libya.
06:26
It follows Italian authorities detaining a rescue boat from German NGO Sea-Watch after
06:32
they rescued almost 300 people in international waters off Libya.
06:37
Italy accuses the rescue happened without permission from Libyan authorities, but the
06:42
NGO claims permission is not required under international law.
06:52
Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Jakarta's Istiklal Mosque embraced each other as they
06:57
met to discuss interfaith harmony on Thursday.
07:00
Representatives of six religions were present at the site, Southeast Asia's largest mosque.
07:06
The Grand Imam, Naseruddin Umar, and the Pope stood at the entrance to the Tunnel of Friendship,
07:12
connecting the mosque to the neighbouring cathedral.
07:15
In the face of today's many challenges, we respond with the sign of fraternity, Francis
07:20
said in an initial greeting.
07:28
This is Gianni the buzzard.
07:30
She goes out in the evening to guard the archaeological park of Pompeii.
07:36
Her job requires her to be attentive and efficient, as she is called to control the park and defend
07:41
the excavations from pigeons.
07:44
During the COVID lockdown in 2020, the closure of the park led to a higher number of the
07:49
birds nesting.
07:52
They drove away other species and endangered the ruined ruins with their particularly corrosive
07:57
droppings.
07:59
The fragility of the heritage site means it's important all elements that compose it are
08:03
kept in balance.
08:33
Gianna and Aria are part of a team of 10 birds of prey who have been patrolling the site
08:45
at least three times a week for the past two years.
08:49
Their efforts ward off invasive and harmful species such as pigeons, magpies and crows.
09:03
Guided by the signals of her instructor, Gianna uses her hunting skills to search
09:12
the rooms of the Pompeian houses, but her mission is simply to chase species away.
09:33
Falconry was also practiced by the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii.
09:41
Today, it is an ecological method that respects both the environment and its animals, even
09:47
those that Gianna helps keep away from the precious archaeological site.
10:00
Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, is gearing up for the Formula One Grand Prix set for September
10:07
15.
10:08
Almost all hotels are fully booked for that weekend.
10:12
2,000 volunteers, 1,400 marshals and 1,500 employees are working together to make sure
10:22
everything runs smoothly.
10:25
The vibes are amazing because there are a lot of preparations and behind the scenes
10:31
and you are always learning something, you are having fun.
10:35
Of course I feel very excited for this because we have a lot of events, some challenges and
10:43
such a big team working.
10:47
For me it's really important to be here.
10:51
For the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, organizers have implemented new technologies and upgraded
10:58
track infrastructure, enhancing safety and minimizing disruptions for residents by reducing
11:05
road closures and traffic congestions.
11:09
It's a growing sport, it's expanding globally as well, so to be part of that, it's great
11:17
for our country, it brings a lot of recognition, it brings in a lot of tourism as well.
11:24
There's also a financial gain for the country and the citizens.
11:29
Seating capacity has been increased by 35% to meet the demand for tickets and new stands
11:37
have been added along the track.
