00:00The EU unveils plans for major agricultural reforms with a focus on sustainability and

00:06targeted support for farmers.

00:35After months of intense demonstrations by farmers this past winter and spring, changes

00:39could be on the horizon for Europe's agricultural sector.

00:43The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has just published its strategic

00:47dialogue with key stakeholders on the future of farming, with ideas like shifting how EU

00:52funds are allocated to farmers by need rather than by size.

00:57The discussion, spearheaded earlier this year, is seen as essential in bridging the highly

01:01polarised debate surrounding the Common Agricultural Policy, or CAP.

01:05The CAP, which accounts for one third of the EU's budget, is now under review.

01:11The recommendation is to make the CAP fit for purpose.

01:16This means on the one side enabling for lively rural areas.

01:24This means, in the second function, income support.

01:30But as the CAP is public money, this income support should be targeted, much more targeted,

01:38to those who actually need this support.

01:43These suggestions are expected to form the basis for the European Commission's new Agriculture

01:48and Food Proposal, which is set to be released by early 2025.

01:52Environmental groups like Greenpeace have cautiously welcomed the discussions, calling

01:57it a step towards sustainability.

01:59Clearly, if I had to write this, I would write it very differently, but I accept it again

02:06as a consensus after seven months of very hard work and very tough negotiations.

02:11So I'm extremely happy to see, for instance, all this group of stakeholders accepting the

02:16fact that we need to address the negative impacts of livestock farming, not at the expenses

02:22of farmers.

02:23We need to help farmers in the transition, but it's clear that we all agree we need to

02:28tackle the problem of livestock in the areas with very high livestock concentration.

02:35One key issue raised during last spring's protests was funding the transition to a more

02:40sustainable agricultural system.

02:43Farmers, through their main association, Copper Kojeka, were involved in the talks.

02:48Farmers cannot support on their own the totality of changes.

02:54Some changes have a cost or make it difficult to operate, because changes are not important.

03:01The text also calls on the European Commission to ensure greater coherence between its trade

03:14and sustainability policies.

03:20The last time Giorgio Meloni's party, Fratelli d'Italia, held an executive meeting at a national

03:25level attended by the highest ranking figures was in 2022, the year her government took

03:33office.

03:34So the timing of this gathering is quite significant.

03:37According to Fratelli d'Italia's officials, the aim of the meeting was, quote, to assess

03:44the work that has been done so far and outline the agenda for the coming months.

03:48Several issues were discussed during the meeting that was introduced by Italy's Prime Minister

03:54Giorgio Meloni, who's also the party's president.

03:58Among them was the 2025 budget law, which is considered a key measure of the government's

04:05political programme.

04:07The procedure for its approval will begin soon, with the first step being the submission

04:12of the structural budget plan, providing the framework for the 2025 budget.

04:18It's too early to get a full and detailed picture of the measure.

04:21What we do know, as confirmed by Giorgio Meloni, is that the focus will be on tax cuts while

04:25sustaining businesses and improve the livelihoods of both Italian families and workers.

04:31We asked a member of Fratelli d'Italia what was discussed during the meeting and what

04:35the priorities are moving forward.

04:51But during the meeting, Giorgio Meloni also addressed the controversy making headlines

05:03in Italy surrounding the country's culture minister, San Giuliano, over claims made by

05:08Maria Rosaria Boccia regarding her alleged appointment as the minister's adviser.

05:14Although San Giuliano denied the claims and the use of public funds to pay Boccia, Meloni

05:19warned that mistakes are not permitted.

05:22According to a recent poll, the majority of Italians approves Meloni's leadership.

05:26How her cabinet handles the state's finances will be a key factor in ensuring she will

05:31complete the government's five-year term.

05:43French politicians have been urging the UK government to take action against migrant

05:47deaths.

05:48It comes after more people were seen making the dangerous journey across the English Channel,

05:54only a day after 12 migrants died after a boat carrying over 50 capsized.

05:59Meanwhile, off the coast of Italy, the Coast Guard rescued seven men from a sinking boat

06:22that had left from Libya.

06:26It follows Italian authorities detaining a rescue boat from German NGO Sea-Watch after

06:32they rescued almost 300 people in international waters off Libya.

06:37Italy accuses the rescue happened without permission from Libyan authorities, but the

06:42NGO claims permission is not required under international law.

06:52Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Jakarta's Istiklal Mosque embraced each other as they

06:57met to discuss interfaith harmony on Thursday.

07:00Representatives of six religions were present at the site, Southeast Asia's largest mosque.

07:06The Grand Imam, Naseruddin Umar, and the Pope stood at the entrance to the Tunnel of Friendship,
