Shakespeare once said,
00:01
all the world's a stage and all the people merely players.
00:05
He also said,
00:06
mine eyes smell onions.
00:08
True story.
00:10
Regarding the stage and players, however,
00:12
the same could be said for court.
00:14
A court without the players, after all,
00:16
is just a room.
00:18
A room that could use some feng shui,
00:20
but a room nonetheless.
00:22
And if you're going to represent yourself in a court case,
00:24
you need to know all the players and their roles.
00:27
Let's start with the parties involved in the lawsuit.
00:30
Those that are doing the suing or accusing
00:33
are called plaintiffs.
00:35
Those that are being sued or accused
00:37
are called defendants.
00:39
From there, naturally comes the lawyers
00:41
representing each party.
00:42
Now, you may be representing yourself,
00:44
but chances are your opponent isn't.
00:47
They may have one or more lawyers on their team,
00:49
which is something LegalYou can help you face.
00:52
There is, of course, no case without a judge.
00:55
When court is in session,
00:57
the judge rules the courtroom from the bench.
00:59
Sometimes the judge will hold hearings
01:01
in a meeting room called chambers.
01:03
In civil cases, if they're not settled up front,
01:06
the judge will set a trial.
01:08
Then, potentially, a jury comes into play.
01:11
Each party has a right to ask for a jury in this trial.
01:14
If that right is waived,
01:16
then the judge will decide the case by herself.
01:18
In either scenario, witnesses may be called
01:21
to give testimony on the facts and issues
01:23
of the case at hand.
01:24
Depending on who calls the witness,
01:26
they can be labeled either the plaintiffs or the defendants.
01:29
But each party gets an equal opportunity
01:31
to examine the witness, no matter their designation.
01:34
Then there is the court clerk.
01:37
The clerk administers oaths,
01:38
oversees records and exhibits,
01:40
and other administrative tasks.
01:42
There is also a courtroom deputy,
01:44
sometimes called a bailiff.
01:46
He is there to maintain order
01:47
and to make sure the courtroom is safe and secure.
01:50
In busy courtrooms, the deputy may be helping
01:53
the judge and the clerk with the documents
01:55
or with calling the cases.
01:57
Usually, there is also a court reporter.
01:59
The court reporter is necessary for every trial,
02:02
but a party must ask and pay for one to be there.
02:05
The court reporter manually records
02:07
everything said during the proceedings.
02:09
Sometimes an official interpreter is needed
02:11
to help witnesses who do not speak English
02:13
understand the questions and translate their answers.
02:17
In most cases, like the court reporter,
02:19
a party will have to pay for one to be there.
02:22
Going to court alone is never easy,
02:24
but knowing who you will be dealing with
02:25
is a big step up.
02:27
LegalYou will help you with any other questions
02:30
you have regarding going to court.
02:32
We're there to expertly help you go it alone.
