00:10Regarding the stage and players, however,
00:12the same could be said for court.
00:14A court without the players, after all,
00:16is just a room.
00:18A room that could use some feng shui,
00:20but a room nonetheless.
00:22And if you're going to represent yourself in a court case,
00:24you need to know all the players and their roles.
00:27Let's start with the parties involved in the lawsuit.
00:30Those that are doing the suing or accusing
00:33are called plaintiffs.
00:35Those that are being sued or accused
00:37are called defendants.
00:39From there, naturally comes the lawyers
00:41representing each party.
00:42Now, you may be representing yourself,
00:44but chances are your opponent isn't.
00:47They may have one or more lawyers on their team,

00:52There is, of course, no case without a judge.
00:55When court is in session,
00:57the judge rules the courtroom from the bench.
00:59Sometimes the judge will hold hearings
01:01in a meeting room called chambers.
01:03In civil cases, if they're not settled up front,

01:08Then, potentially, a jury comes into play.
01:11Each party has a right to ask for a jury in this trial.
01:14If that right is waived,
01:16then the judge will decide the case by herself.
01:18In either scenario, witnesses may be called
01:21to give testimony on the facts and issues
01:23of the case at hand.
01:24Depending on who calls the witness,
01:26they can be labeled either the plaintiffs or the defendants.
01:29But each party gets an equal opportunity
01:31to examine the witness, no matter their designation.
01:34Then there is the court clerk.
01:37The clerk administers oaths,
01:38oversees records and exhibits,
01:40and other administrative tasks.
01:42There is also a courtroom deputy,
01:44sometimes called a bailiff.
01:46He is there to maintain order
01:47and to make sure the courtroom is safe and secure.
01:50In busy courtrooms, the deputy may be helping
01:53the judge and the clerk with the documents
01:55or with calling the cases.
01:57Usually, there is also a court reporter.
01:59The court reporter is necessary for every trial,
02:02but a party must ask and pay for one to be there.
02:05The court reporter manually records
02:07everything said during the proceedings.
02:09Sometimes an official interpreter is needed
02:11to help witnesses who do not speak English
02:13understand the questions and translate their answers.
02:17In most cases, like the court reporter,
02:19a party will have to pay for one to be there.
