Lancashire Police officer PC Ashley Aspinall suffered bruising to brain after being assaulted in Blackpool

As a result of being knocked to the ground by defendant Ian Scott, PC Ashley Aspinall suffered a serious head injury, including bruising to the brain.  At one point his distraught colleagues thought Ashley might die at the scene.

00:06distressing footage of officers working on the front line. In particular it's about

00:10PC Ashley Aspinall who was seriously assaulted in Blackpool in 2023. As a result of being

00:17knocked to the ground, PC Aspinall suffered a serious head injury including bruising to

00:21the brain. At one point his distraught colleagues thought Ashley might die at the scene. He

00:27ends up being in hospital for 11 days and it was a further 4 months before he was able

00:31to return to the job he loves. A warning it does contain some graphic images this video

00:37but it's a real eye opener showing you the risks, the dangers that our officers in Lancashire

00:43put themselves in each and every day to protect us the public.

01:44I can't even describe into words the pain and I just remember just lying on the floor

01:50and just this instant just this feeling at the back of my head and I just remember thinking

01:56I was lying in like a puddle or something and I was looking around like I don't remember

02:00it raining and it was only since I touched the back of my head and from the tip of my

02:05finger to my palm was just was just pink in blood and I just don't understand how I got

02:10there and I just remember just pressing my emergency button just seeing black and just

02:14going unconscious basically. Being a police officer now for 5 and a half years and I'm

02:18more than aware that you know risk and things can change you know a click of your fingers

02:22a drop of a hat and I just I think I just wasn't expecting that risk just to escalate

02:27so quickly. You know police officers get assaulted unfortunately but you know I've been bitten,

02:35punched, slapped, kicked but I think this was just a different form of level of assault

02:41to the point where I just genuinely didn't know if I was going to be able to get back up.

02:46I just recall at that point thinking sorry.

02:55I just recall just remembering if I was ever going to see my daughter again.

03:21She was barely one at the time. My wife was going through serious postnatal depression.

03:28She was very ill and my daughter's got learning difficulties or she's barely walking, she's

03:37non-verbal and obviously I've got all that stress at home but I love my job. I absolutely

03:43love my job. I come to work every day and I want to go to work every day and I enjoy

03:47getting up in the morning because I understand that you know there's people out there that

03:52need our help.
