Hello I'm Live Reporter Matthew and I'm bringing you a video from Lancashire Police which shows
00:06
distressing footage of officers working on the front line. In particular it's about
00:10
PC Ashley Aspinall who was seriously assaulted in Blackpool in 2023. As a result of being
00:17
knocked to the ground, PC Aspinall suffered a serious head injury including bruising to
00:21
the brain. At one point his distraught colleagues thought Ashley might die at the scene. He
00:27
ends up being in hospital for 11 days and it was a further 4 months before he was able
00:31
to return to the job he loves. A warning it does contain some graphic images this video
00:37
but it's a real eye opener showing you the risks, the dangers that our officers in Lancashire
00:43
put themselves in each and every day to protect us the public.
01:13
It's alright, you've got Nick, you've got Benedict, you've got Lisa and I'm with you yeah. I'll be with you, I'm not leaving you.
01:44
I can't even describe into words the pain and I just remember just lying on the floor
01:50
and just this instant just this feeling at the back of my head and I just remember thinking
01:56
I was lying in like a puddle or something and I was looking around like I don't remember
02:00
it raining and it was only since I touched the back of my head and from the tip of my
02:05
finger to my palm was just was just pink in blood and I just don't understand how I got
02:10
there and I just remember just pressing my emergency button just seeing black and just
02:14
going unconscious basically. Being a police officer now for 5 and a half years and I'm
02:18
more than aware that you know risk and things can change you know a click of your fingers
02:22
a drop of a hat and I just I think I just wasn't expecting that risk just to escalate
02:27
so quickly. You know police officers get assaulted unfortunately but you know I've been bitten,
02:35
punched, slapped, kicked but I think this was just a different form of level of assault
02:41
to the point where I just genuinely didn't know if I was going to be able to get back up.
02:46
I just recall at that point thinking sorry.
02:55
I just recall just remembering if I was ever going to see my daughter again.
03:04
Ash the ambulance is here. Ash stay with us.
03:07
Keep squeezing my hand. There's more cops here mate. Alright keep squeezing. Ash squeeze
03:13
my hand. Keep squeezing my hand mate. You keep squeezing my hand. Don't stop squeezing my
03:20
hand.
03:21
She was barely one at the time. My wife was going through serious postnatal depression.
03:28
She was very ill and my daughter's got learning difficulties or she's barely walking, she's
03:37
non-verbal and obviously I've got all that stress at home but I love my job. I absolutely
03:43
love my job. I come to work every day and I want to go to work every day and I enjoy
03:47
getting up in the morning because I understand that you know there's people out there that
03:52
need our help.
03:57
I love my job.
04:27
I love my job.
