Denmark celebrates return of spicy South Korean noodles

Danes in central Copenhagen on Thursday (Aug 8) marked the return to supermarket shelves of fiery South Korean ramen noodles that had been banned for being too spicy, a decision that has since been partly reversed. 00:00These ramen noodles from South Korea had been banned in Denmark until recently for being

00:07too spicy.

00:08It is a lot spicier than I thought it was going to be, but it is fantastic, I think.

00:16But they're back after the Danish regulator partly reversed its decision.

00:21To celebrate, Samyang, the noodle's worldwide seller, served up the fiery dish to fans and

00:27paid influencers on a boat in Copenhagen's harbour.

00:32In June, stores removed three Buldak instant ramen products after the Danish Veterinary

00:38and Food Administration found their high capsaicin level posed a serious health risk.

00:44It has said that compound found in chilies creates a burning sensation and can cause

00:50intoxication, nausea, high blood pressure and vomiting when ingested in high quantities.

00:56At the time, it said the warning was aimed specifically at youngsters who challenge each

01:01other on social media to eat the spicy ramen, as well as vulnerable adults.

01:06But Samyang fought the ban.

01:08Actually, we just wanted to share our distinct and spicy flavour with the world, but that's

01:16why we actively cooperate with the Danish government to undo the ban.

01:23The ban was lifted on those two products last month after further examination showed

01:28they did not exceed the critical capsaicin level.
