Love your local pub feature - The sun Inn West bars Chesterfield

00:00Pubs have been a cornerstone of our local communities for centuries, offering a place

00:12for people to meet together and socialise, as well as providing thousands of jobs and

00:16a cornerstone of the local economy. Here we go behind the bar to meet the people who run

00:21our pubs and say why it's important for you to love your local.

00:24Hi, my name's Daniel, I'm from the Sunning and Chesterfield on 13 Westbars. I've currently

00:29been at the Sunning pub for the last four and a half years, coming to five years at

00:33Christmas. If you've never been to the Sunning, we are meant to be one of the most haunted

00:37pubs in Chesterfield. The pub was built in 1913. We have stories from coachmen being

00:46thrown down the well that was murdered here, and over the history there's been movement

00:51of barrels down the cellar. I suppose also having COVID when it was locked down, the

00:57fire alarm kept going off all through the night for days and days and days. We had

01:01the fire brigade come out and disconnect it, and still the alarm was going off even though

01:06it wasn't connected. I did contact a medium and she did say to me what it is, is the spirits

01:12have no energy because the pub is closed down, so the best thing to do is play music through

01:15the night. So we had to keep the music system on for 24 hours a day, so the whole time through

01:20COVID to keep the spirits at ease. That was the story and that's what happened and that's

01:25what we did. I currently have here at the Sunning about five staff. I don't know if

01:30you've ever been here on a weekend. We are a very busy pub. You do have to queue to get

01:34in. We have mega drink deals throughout the weekend, especially at the weekend. As you

01:39can see from some of the posters, we do Baby Guinness, Jammie Dodgers, you name it, we

01:46do it. The most popular drink we have is Carlin. That's the most popular drink, but recently

01:52we have just got in Cruzel Campo, as that seems to be taking over Carlin at the moment

01:55and we're doing very well on that. So how many staff do you have? Currently we have

01:59about seven staff. I have Donna, who she's been with me the longest. She's been with

02:03me about three years. Weekends I have a glass washer, glass collector, door security, that's

02:09D-Line, three bar staff, maybe four bar staff on the payday weekends. We also do really

02:15good promotions on the payday weekends. That's the last weekend of each month, so you should

02:19come down and check those out, because it's always changing each month. We've just recently

02:22started in last month Rock Night, which seems to be going down quite well. That's every

02:26Wednesday from 7 till 11. Thursdays we do Karaoke, that's also from 7 till midnight,

02:32that's with Steve Reiler. Friday we do have DJ. Saturday we also have DJ, starting from

02:387 till 1am in the morning. We have free pool days as well, so you can come and check those

02:44out. Basically we're just a well-hearted community pub. We know all the regulars, we

02:51know 90% of the customers that come in on a daily basis. We know what they drink, fast

02:56service. I think what makes a good pub is actually it's the community that make it.

03:01Just one pub of the year, I won pub of the quarter, pub of the quarter again. I've been

03:06community hero. We do like to give a lot back to the community. At Easter we raise Easter

03:11eggs. I was actually on BBC News for the most Easter eggs. We did 500 Easter eggs and

03:18donated them to the local charities and the food bank. We do the children's hospital ward

03:23at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, take them around to Kids Planet and other nurseries

03:27and schools. Then we do it again at Christmas time with selection boxes, where nearly last

03:32year we nearly got 1,000 selection boxes that we had to distribute around Chesterfield.

03:38It's the community that makes a pub and we like to give back because they give to us.
