00:02 - Pubs have been a cornerstone

00:09 of our local communities for centuries,

00:11 offering a place for people to meet together and socialize,

00:14 as well as providing thousands of jobs

00:16 and a cornerstone of the local economy.

00:18 Here we go behind the bar to meet the people

00:20 who run our pubs and say,

00:21 well, it's important for you to love your local.

00:24 - We're at the Victoria or Nice Biscay

00:27 for its latest Love Your Local feature.

00:29 If you can tell me a bit about yourself.

00:31 - My name's Lee McMahon,

00:32 I'm the landlord of the Victoria or Nice Biscay.

00:36 I've been here for about seven and a half years.

00:37 - How many staff do you have?

00:39 - We've got four that actually work at the bar,

00:41 and five including myself,

00:43 and we run the day-to-day dealings between the five of us.

00:47 - Can you tell me a bit, what's the most popular drink?

00:50 - At the moment, it's definitely Carlin and John Smith's.

00:52 We're mainly a day trade pub,

00:54 so we get a lot of the older generation coming in

00:56 and they're bitter drinkers.

00:58 - How long have you been in the pub trade?

01:01 - Pub trade itself, about 15 years.

01:03 - Yeah, what other pubs have you been?

01:05 - I've been all over the country.

01:06 I used to work for a holding company,

01:08 so I could be in a pub six months,

01:10 I could be in there a year,

01:11 until someone took on the tenancy,

01:12 and then I moved on to another one.

01:15 And I started with Craft Union,

01:16 where it's like a managed company,

01:19 and you're here for as long as you want to be.

01:21 - What's the best thing about being at the Victoria?

01:24 - I would say the community.

01:26 It's not like a job now,

01:27 it's opening the door to my living room,

01:29 waiting for my mates to come in.

01:31 - That's great.

01:32 Is there any fun parts of running the pub so far?

01:34 - Virtually every day, to be honest with you.

01:35 There's always some form of character in here

01:37 that's entertaining and whatnot.

01:40 - Have you got any future events going off

01:42 or anything you'd like to mention?

01:44 - We are looking to do a charity event

01:45 for the flood victims.

01:47 We want to do it for the kids for Christmas,

01:49 so the parents don't have to worry

01:50 about getting Christmas presents for them.

01:53 They can concentrate on getting their houses sorted out

01:55 after the flood damage.

01:57 - Have you got a date at all?

01:58 - Not as yet, no, unfortunately.

02:01 It's going to be quite hard trying to get it sorted out

02:03 because we're looking to get vouchers from Smiths

02:06 so the parents can take the kids in

02:08 and they can pick what they want.

02:09 We're just trying to get that set up.

02:11 We are looking to do it

02:12 slightly late November, early December.
