As rescue teams continue to search for survivors of landslides in India’s southern Kerala state, local leaders are turning their focus to providing relief and support to the thousands of survivors.

00:00Rescue teams are continuing their search for survivors after a landslide killed over 300 people in southern India,

00:07but hopes of finding anyone alive are fading.

00:10Heavy rain in Kerala state triggered a massive mud and rock slide early on Tuesday morning.

00:16Hundreds of people remain trapped. Nearly 1,600 have been rescued,

00:20but soldiers are still working to access the worst affected areas.

00:24Some 8,000 people are being sheltered in makeshift camps across the region.

00:29This is the worst thing that can happen to a human being.

00:32This is beyond our expectations.

00:35So, we need to provide them with the necessary counselling.
