00:00So how will the government give guarantees that this will not close the space for legitimate
00:12political debate, criticism and discussion?
00:14That's the question.
00:15Former Minister Khairi Jamaluddin has asked the government to provide assurances that
00:21planned regulations on social media and internet messaging services will not suppress genuine
00:27debates.
00:28In the latest episode of his Keluar Sekejap podcast, Khairi said he supported the Malaysian
00:33Communications and Multimedia Commission's effort in requiring social media and internet
00:39messaging services with at least 8 million registered users in Malaysia to apply for
00:45a licence.
00:46I don't like it when there's a communication platform that doesn't have any regulations
00:56and there's no censorship at all.
01:02I'm worried that the government's intention to look at the issues I mentioned earlier,
01:11such as fake news, sexual crimes, fake news in the media, and so on, I'm worried that
01:22the government is trying to close the space for legitimate political debate.
01:38Last Saturday, MCMC announced that all social media and internet messaging services with
01:44at least 8 million registered users in Malaysia must apply for a licence.
01:50MCMC said the licence would be introduced on August 1, with enforcement effective from
01:56January 1 next year.
01:58The new policy is aimed at creating a safer internet environment for children and families.
