Pan Zhanle: Meet China’s men’s 100m freestyle record-breaker

Teenage swim sensation Pan Zhanle is one of Team China’s main medal hopes.   Earlier this year the 19-year-old recorded the fastest-ever men’s 100m freestyle at the World Championships in Doha - and in the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay in Paris, he broke the Olympic record with a 46.92. 00:00It's been an unforgettable 12 months for Pan Jiangle.

00:03At the Hangzhou Games in September,

00:05he became the first Asian swimmer to break the 47-second mark.

00:09Well, CGTN spoke to Pan shortly after,

00:12and he said he had his sights set on the world record

00:15and potentially breaking it at the Olympics.

00:18But just five months after that interview

00:20and during February's Spring Festival holiday,

00:22he achieved his dream at the World Championships in Doha

00:26with a time of 46.80 seconds.

00:33Well, Pan put up this post on Chinese TikTok Douyin,

00:36showing the certificate he received

00:37to mark the achievement.

00:39He broke David Popovich's record set in 2022,

00:42and they will now battle it out

00:44in 100-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics.

00:47Swimming World magazine says

00:48it's the pick of the races in the pool,

00:50dubbing it a scintillating showdown.

00:53In the buildup to the Olympics,

00:54Pan's performance coach has been posting

00:56some of his intense training on Instagram.

00:59But the swimmer has also made time for fun.

01:01He put up this video of a race between him and his agent.

01:04Of course, there could only be one winner.

01:07And as well as giving fans the latest

01:09on his life in the pool,

01:10he also posts daily updates on his pet cat,

01:13although those will be paused for a while

01:15as he goes for Olympic glory in Paris.
