Love and feathers are in the air in this Welsh musical, which is an slightly unusual mix of drama and colourful songs that's quite likeable.

Love and Feathers are in the air in the Welsh musical romance Chuk Chuk Baby.
00:04
Chicken factory worker Louise Brealey is stuck living with her ex-husband and his girlfriend,
00:09
taking care of his dying mother, when teenage crush Annabel Scully returns to clear her childhood home
00:15
and a connection forms between them.
00:17
The film is an unusual take on the jukebox musical in that the songs are being played diegetically
00:22
and the characters are actually singing along with it, which is a great way of showing how music can be
00:27
emotionally resonant but also can be ways of expressing things that we can't actually say.
00:33
I also genuinely enjoy the chemistry between Brealey and Scully as two people that come from
00:37
damaged traumatic backgrounds, one of whom managed to escape and the other who hasn't,
00:43
and that shared history between them is what brings them together but also threatens to tear them apart.
00:48
It's definitely rough around the edges, a quirky mix of colourful poptimism and kitchen sink drama
00:53
that shouldn't work as well as it does but I actually found to be surprisingly charming, funny and moving.
