00:09Best Health Teachings by Hazrat Imam Ali, A.S.
00:13Bismillah Al Rahman Al Raheem.
00:15Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatu Allahi Ta'ala Wa Barakatuh.
00:20Do you want to be healthy and feel good?
00:23Perhaps you will not find anyone not sharing this goal.
00:27Whilst there is a plethora of advice online and by experts, we have wonderful recommendations
00:32in Islamic teachings, including the sayings of the holy ul-Ulbayt A.S.
00:37They all lived a healthy life and would love their followers to be healthy too.
00:42For instance, I have personally found hundreds of narrations on healthy lifestyle from the
00:46commander of the faithful Amir ul-Muminin, Imam Ali, A.S.
00:52Here are 10 amongst many of his tips in this regard.
00:5510 Best Health Related Narrations
00:571.
00:59Oral Hygiene.
01:00In many riwayat traditions, Imam Ali A.S. encourages the usage of the miswak which is
01:06a teeth-cleaning twig which has been used for over 7,000 years.
01:10Although it is still widely available and can indeed be used, the emphasis in these
01:15narrations can perhaps be extended to general oral hygiene such as brushing the teeth, gargling
01:21as well as flossing.
01:22Your mouth is where the Qiyun is being recited.
01:26Imam Ali A.S. is reported to have said so hence purify it.
01:30In another narration, he says that cleaning the teeth pleases Allah, is the sunnah of
01:35the holy prophet and a cleanser for the mouth.
01:382.
01:39Washing the Body with Water.
01:40The commander of the faithful, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said use
01:45water to rid your bodies from unpleasant smells, for Allah subhana wa ta'ala dislikes the unclean
01:51ones, especially those who smell annoys anyone next to them.
01:55Indeed, the holy Qiyun states that Allah subhana wa ta'ala loves those who purify themselves
02:012,222.
02:03We have all heard how cleanliness is part of Iman, according to Hadith.
02:08As Muslims therefore, we must practice what our inspirational leaders have emphasized.
02:13Showers and baths therefore, should be a very regular practice.
02:17Interestingly, in the book Makarim ul Akhlaq, it is reported that Imam Ali A.S. recommends
02:23drinking three handfuls of hot water before having a shower or a bath to remove any pains
02:28in the body.
02:293.
02:30Washing Hands Before and After Eating.
02:33Wash your hands before and after food, for this increases sustenance, risk, as well as
02:38improves eyesight.
02:40This was a Hadith from Imam Ali A.S.
02:43It points to the esoteric link behind some actions that we do to maintain personal hygiene.
02:49It will be both good for our bodies as well as result in favors of the almighty subhana
02:53wa ta'ala, such as more blessings from him.
02:574.
02:58The Art of Eating.
02:59In advice to his son, Imam al-Hassan alayhi as-salam, Amir ul Muminin, peace be upon him,
03:06states do not eat unless you are hungry.
03:08Leave eating whilst you are still hungry, and chew the food very well.
03:125.
03:13Do not overeat.
03:15Overeating causes illness.
03:17Excessive eating corrupts the soul.
03:19Be wary of eating too much for it darkens the heart.
03:23These are some of the narrations from Imam alayhi as-salam, highlighting the dangers
03:27of excessive consumption of food.
03:30Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we lose self-control or feel pressured
03:34to eat.
03:35Even those may be situations where we may not be hungry.
03:39For example, we find ourselves when we have to eat from buffet or when we go from one
03:44invitation to another.
03:45Amir ul Muminin alayhi as-salam, once again links food consumption to the health of one's
03:51soul, the nafs and highlights how the path of spirituality is illuminated with moderation
03:56and avoidance of excessiveness.
03:58In the book Gura al-Haykam Imam alayhi as-salam, is reported to have said if you reduce how
04:04much you eat, your intellectual ability will enhance.
04:076.
04:08Night Worship.
04:09At first glance, you might be thinking, how is this linked to a healthy lifestyle?
04:14Well, in a number of traditions, it is reported that Imam alayhi as-salam said to stay up
04:19at night worshipping Allah subhana wa ta'ala, brings about health for the body, pleasure
04:25of the Lord, adherence to the ways of the prophets, and pouring of God's mercy.
04:30This is probably mainly linked to praying the night prayer, Salat ul-Lail, which can
04:34be prayed anytime at night, but preferably after midnight.
04:387.
04:39Personal Hygiene.
04:41Imam alayhi as-salam recommends that the nails are trimmed every Friday.
04:45In a hadith found in the book Tib Alema, Medicine of the Imams, he reportedly said such a deed
04:51protects against illness.
04:53Similarly, in book Makarim ul-Akhlaq Imam alayhi as-salam is reported to have stated
04:58removing the underarm hair reduces unpleasant smells.
05:02It is indeed the sunnah and a source of purification and what the Prophet has commanded.
05:078.
05:08Food Recommends by Hazat Ali A.S.
05:10Through looking at various sources, I found narrations pointing to what Amir ul-Muminin
05:15peace be upon him, used to eat and what he would recommend you and I to actually eat.
05:20Green vegetables, eggs, starting with a little bit of salt before eating.
05:25Pomegranate, bread, vinegar, vegetable oils, dates, honey, and milk, amongst many others,
05:32were mentioned by Amir ul-Muminin in narrations.
05:35In an interesting narration, Imam Ali alayhi as-salam encourages eating oats mixed with
05:40water or milk, like a porridge known as harissa.
05:44Eat the harissa, he says, for it gives you strength for worship for 40 days and it was
05:48the food that was descended upon Rasul Allah Salah allahu alayhi wa alayhi wa salam.
05:55Foods and Water Despite many of us not drinking enough water
05:58these days, Imam Ali alayhi as-salam recommends that excessive water consumption should be
06:04avoided as well.
06:05He tells us do not make your hearts die with excessive food and drink.
06:10For the heart dies like a plant if you drink too much water.
06:13Conclusion Some vices that are related to health.
06:17The commander of the faithful, peace be upon him, warns of the impact of some spiritual
06:22vices on the body and health in general.
06:25For example, it is narrated that he said the envious person is sick even if his body is
06:30healthy.
06:31Similarly, he is reported to have said to have hatred towards others results in ongoing
06:36illness.
06:37He also warns of the impact of stress and the need to distress to avoid illness.
06:42He stated, stress dissolves the body, or in another narration, sadness destroys the body.
06:48These are some of the gems from the statements of a man who is truly a role model for each
06:52and every human being and the best student of Rasul Allah Muhammad, Salah allahu alayhi
06:57wa alayhi wa salam.
07:00May Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la grant us the permission to follow in his footsteps.
