Police investigate after eight geese killed by car

Police are investigating after a wildlife activist found eight dead geese - apparently run over by a car.

Shocking footage shows the dead animals lined up along the curb of Anchor Boulevard in Dartford, Kent.

Open wounds can be seen on the geese's faces and wings, with some of their necks twisted in an unnatural way.

Carly Ahlen was volunteering at her bird rehabilitation office on Sunday (July 21) when she received a call from fellow activist Joelle Larney alerting her to the "horrific" incident.

She immediately drove over to find eight deceased geese with various brutal injuries, including caved-in skulls and missing eyes.

When Carly arrived, the geese had already been moved off the road by a member of the public and were lying along the nearby grass.

It is Carly's belief that the geese were purposefully ran over by a motorist, who ignored the speed bump and warning signs ahead of the geese.

Carly, who volunteers full-time at the Gabo Wildlife, said: "It was just horrific.

"These eight geese were splayed across the road with blood and feathers everywhere.

"Some had eyes that were missing, fractured wings and even crushed skulls.

"And there's no way this person didn't see the sign directly in front of the area, which tells drivers to slow down because of the animals."

When Joelle initially called Carly, some of the geese were still alive but by she arrived, they were all dead.

Carly said: "In the 15 minutes it took me to drive there, they had all died.

"It's really awful to think someone could do something so cruel to these birds."

Carly and her fellow wildlife rescuers are now intent on getting justice for the geese.

Carly said: "I noticed the CCTV cameras pretty immediately and asked the park staff if they were live.

"I found out they were and called the police straight away so they could follow up with it.

"They said they would pass the case on to Kent Rural Crime Prevention department who would look into it."

Kent Police commented on the ongoing investigation and said: "Kent Police was called at 5.36pm on Sunday 21 July 2024 to a report that eight geese had been found deceased in the middle of the road in Anchor Boulevard, Dartford.

"The informant believed the geese had been involved in a collision with a car.

"Officers from Kent Police Rural Task Force have been made aware and appropriate enquiries will be carried out."
