So actually, once people are in a work environment, there are absolutely some positives there
00:05
in terms of the culture and how they're treated. But one of the main barriers was around recruitment,
00:10
so getting into organisations in the first place. So 48% of people we surveyed said they
00:16
felt they'd experienced bias or discrimination in the recruitment process. And in particular
00:22
there, they talked about a couple of aspects. So one is around sort of experiencing stereotypes
00:27
or biases, negative perceptions around what neurodiversity is, but also some of the habits,
00:32
some of the features of recruitment processes that I guess are just done because neurotypical
00:37
people always work that way. So for instance, when we're interviewing, oftentimes hiring
00:42
managers will say to me, I want to meet someone face to face so I can look them in the eyes.
00:47
We get that sort of view of, you can tell if someone's trustworthy or you can build
00:50
rapport through eye contact. And we actually know for some conditions, autism especially,
00:56
eye contact can feel uncomfortable and sort of extremely intense.
