The Council has announced more than 6,000 fines were issued for breaches of Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone during the first month of enforcement.
00:09
New figures show 6,030 penalty charge notices were handed out in June,
00:14
with 5,756 issued for a first contravention and 274 for a second contravention.
00:22
The amount of fines issued is roughly the same as the first month of Glasgow's Low Emission Zone that came into force one year earlier,
00:29
where 6,139 fines were handed out.
00:33
Edinburgh's Transport Convener, Scott Arthur, said we've already seen that public attitudes towards LEZs are improving across Scotland,
00:41
with a national poll earlier this year indicating that 60% of respondents were in favour of the zones, with just 21% opposed.
00:50
This is clear evidence that people are seeing the many benefits of LEZs
00:54
as they link in with our wider aims to make our city cleaner, greener and healthier for everyone.
01:00
Councillor Arthur added,
01:01
I'd also reiterate that any revenue that we generate from the LEZ will be reinvested into the running of the zone,
01:08
with any surplus funds supporting the LEZ's wider goals.
01:13
Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone, which covers a 1.2 square mile area of the city centre,
01:18
was implemented on 1 June, banning the most polluting vehicles in a bid to clean up the city's air.
01:24
The ban affects most diesel cars and vans registered before September 2015,
01:29
and most petrol cars and vans registered before January 2006.
01:34
But drivers are advised to use an online checker,
01:36
as some vehicles in these categories do comply with the required emission standards.
