03:28One foreign policy expert cautioned that there could be limits to that statement.

03:33It will hopefully inspire confidence in NATO's support for Ukraine.

03:38But at the same time, everyone knows, including Ukrainian politicians,

03:43that US domestic politics will decide Ukraine's NATO membership.

03:48During the summit, the US also announced that it will deploy long-range missiles in Germany.

03:53Russia says that it will provide a military response to the news.

03:57A Green MP, who is a deputy member of the Defence Parliamentary Committee,

04:00says that Germany must rearm itself.

04:03This is one of the realities of the 21st century.

04:08It's not a very good thing to see, but it's just necessary.

04:22but this is currently not the case, so we need to prepare.

04:25Ukrainians warn the support from NATO does not decrease their concerns for their country's future.

04:36it is certainly not enough as far as battling the war machine

04:41that Mr Putin is bringing together against us.

04:46NATO says the command centre in Germany will enhance its support of Ukraine,

04:50but not make the alliance a party to the conflict.

05:05The move automatically triggered the resignation of her cabinet.

05:09However, it will continue as a caretaker government

05:12until a new cabinet is sworn in within the next few months.

05:38what are the plans in the defence sector,

05:41what additional needs could be there,

05:44and what is the wider future of Estonia.

05:47Kalis is one of the EU's most outspoken critics of Russia since their invasion of Ukraine,

05:52acting as a driving force in efforts to punish them with sanctions

05:56and send military support to Ukraine.

06:01For the first time in 45 years of European elections,

06:04the proportion of women in the European Parliament decreases compared to the previous parliament.

06:08Female MEPs in the 10th legislature represent 38.7% of the total,

06:13which is 1% less than those elected in 2019.

06:17The data analysed by think tank EU Matrix shows parity is achieved in the Greens' EFA group

06:22with 50.9% women, while it's around 45% each for left and for the Liberal Renew group.

06:29The percentage decreases drastically in all other groups,

06:32with the lowest being 21.7% in the ultra-conservative ECR.

06:37The CEO of EU Matrix.eu told Euronews that this is one of the impacts of the shift to the right.

06:42This has to do with a lot of factors,

06:45but most of this is because the parties to the right of the political spectrum have gained seats.

06:50Traditionally, there is a bigger representation of women in the centre and left-wing groups,

06:56so it's more of a sociological phenomenon.

07:00It has less to do with the participation of women in politics as such.

07:04The average age has only slightly increased from 49.5 to 50 years old,

07:08the youngest MEP being Austrian Lena Schilling of 23 years old

07:11and the oldest Italian Leoluca Orlando of 76 years old.

07:15The MEPs that are under 40 years old make only 20.4% of the overall.

07:20Per political group, the highest percentage of young MEPs are in Greens' EFA with 41.5%.

07:27The lowest percentage, on the other hand, are in EPP of centre-right with only 11.1%.

07:32The proportion of members over 60 years old is similar, 19.4% of the total,

07:37and the highest percentage is in the EPP with 22.8%.

07:41We have to take into account that also in the last five years,

07:44the lifespan of the European society has also increased.

07:48So, in general, young people who want to get involved in politics

07:52have to find the fastest way towards the top,

07:55and the fastest way is not through the traditional parties,

07:57because there are still a lot of personalities in these parties,

08:00so if they want to reach the top fast, they have to go through new parties.

08:04That's why we're seeing a proliferation of new parties across the continent,

08:07because young people do want to get involved.

08:10Around 54% of the MEPs are newcomers that will have to learn

08:14the ins and outs of the legislative machine in Brussels and Strasbourg.

08:24Hungary has been accused of trying to intimidate civil society

08:27by launching an investigation into Transparency International,

08:30the NGO working to end corruption worldwide.

08:34A newly formed body by the Hungarian government,

08:37named the Sovereign Protection Office, sent a six-page letter to the group

08:41accusing it of aiming to influence the will of the electorate.

08:46Lawyers for Transparency International say the claims are false

08:49and are a response to inquiries it had for Chinese financing of Hungarian transport.

08:56We were expecting, as a member of the civil society group in Hungary,

09:00that one or other of our organizations is going to be assessed or investigated.

09:06We are now scapegoated and singled out.

09:09Definitely, it's a response to our pulling the legs of the Sovereign Protection Office.

09:15We kept on submitting letters to this office,

09:19informing the head of the leadership of the office about potential

09:25sovereign implication in Chinese influence in Hungary.

09:30China is giving a major state finance loan to the Hungarian government

09:36to finance the Belgrade to Budapest railway,

09:38and this is a very obscure investment with no transparency requirements applying.

09:43Budapest denies the Sovereign Protection Law is about stifling freedom of information

09:48and insists that the office is independent of the government

09:51and that the law aims to provide clarity on funding for NGOs.

09:56The legislation creates an office that is independent from the government.

10:02When you refer to investigation or scrutiny initiated by this office,

10:08this is not something that is done by the government.

10:11This is something that is done by the office,

10:13which is institutionally and personally speaking independent from the government.

10:16So I would refer these questions to the office.

10:21The European Commission has issued legal proceedings against Hungary for the Sovereignty Law,

10:25saying that it violates a wide range of EU fundamental rights and values.

10:30Hungary has until the end of the summer to respond.

10:32If it doesn't do so in a satisfactory manner,

10:34the EU says it will have no choice to escalate the situation.
