Thousands attend the funerals of the youngsters killed in a strike on Israel as diplomats
00:06
scramble to avert a regional war.
00:10
Novak Djokovic has defeated Rafael Nadal in the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympics
00:16
men's singles at Roland-Garros.
00:20
The match is likely to be the pair's final head-to-head contest after having played against
00:25
each other 60 times in their careers.
00:29
Djokovic and Nadal have won 46 Grand Slam singles titles between them, including 17
00:35
at the French Open.
00:37
But while Nadal boasts two gold medals, Djokovic has not yet clinched Olympic victory.
00:45
At least two people have been killed and more than 100 injured after a train derailed in
00:51
Russia's Volgograd region.
00:54
The train, which was carrying 800 passengers, was travelling from Kazan to Adler when it
01:00
collided with a cargo truck that had driven onto the tracks despite the approaching train
01:04
signal according to Russian railways.
01:09
Russian investigators have opened a criminal probe into the possible violation of traffic
01:13
safety rules and the operation of railway transport.
01:24
For the second day in a row, the training for the triathlon competition of the Paris
01:31
Olympics has been postponed because the water quality of the Seine River just behind me
01:36
is too polluted.
01:38
The main events, the men's triathlon, is supposed to take place on Tuesday and the women's is
01:43
supposed to take place the day after on Wednesday.
01:46
So what happens in case the water quality does not improve?
01:49
Well, local authorities are insisting that they'll just keep postponing until the Seine
01:54
becomes less polluted.
01:56
However, let's say in the extreme case that it doesn't, well, then the triathlon will
02:00
become a duathlon.
02:01
That means that triathletes will only compete in the cycling and running sections of the
02:06
competition.
02:07
So that means no swimming.
02:09
And as for the marathon swimming events that are scheduled for August 8 and August 9 in
02:13
the Seine River, well, the city does have a plan B in case the water is still too polluted.
02:20
And that's that the events will take place in a nautical stadium east of Paris.
02:26
And if necessary, the events could also be moved to where the canoeing and rowing competitions
02:31
are currently being held.
02:33
Sofia Katzenkova reporting from Paris for Euronews.
02:41
On Monday, Belgium will be welcoming four children from Gaza for medical treatment.
02:47
Three of the young patients, aged between 6 and 10, need treatment for cancer.
02:53
They are accompanied on their journey by their families.
02:58
In total, the Belgian authorities are welcoming 12 people as part of this medical evacuation
03:03
mission, which began thousands of kilometers away.
03:09
These patients have been evacuated through PCRF prior to the Rafah closure to Egypt,
03:16
used it as a central hub, and then pulled from there to Belgium.
03:21
And obviously, as you can tell, the trip is not easy.
03:24
These are patients that have lost everything at home.
03:26
They have lost their homes.
03:28
They have lost loved ones.
03:30
And so we had to make sure that they've already been displaced once, that they feel comfortable
03:35
as we're taking them to another location.
03:39
While Belgium is treating these children, the transport was carried out by a Slovakian
03:43
medical aircraft.
03:44
This is the second mission of its kind undertaken by the European Union, the World Health Organization,
03:49
Egypt and the NGO.
03:53
A few days ago, Spain welcomed 16 young patients, again accompanied by family members.
04:01
Each country, again, picks based off the criteria that they believe is best for the way that
04:05
they can help those patients.
04:07
And so Spain has had patients that had orthopedic problems, chronic conditions, cardiac problems.
04:15
Belgium's focus was primarily more onto the oncology-like patients.
04:21
These patients will remain in Europe for the duration of their treatment and until there
04:25
is a ceasefire in Gaza.
04:28
Experts remain hopeful that other European Union countries will open their doors to children in need.
04:42
In a star-studded Sunday, Rafa Nadal reached the second round of the men's singles to set
04:48
up a thriller match against Novak Djokovic.
04:52
In basketball, LeBron James returned to the Olympics after 12 years to help beat Serbia
04:59
by 34 points in the Americans' opening game.
05:03
France kept racking up goals as Pauline Ferrand-PrΓ©vot finished first in mountain bike racing after
05:11
more than a decade of trying.
05:14
And LΓ©on Marchand won the men's 400-meter individual medley in swimming.
05:20
Japan celebrated twice thanks to gold medal wins in judo and women's skateboarding.
05:28
Sunday's victories sent Japan top of the gold medal table on level terms with Australia.
05:35
Meanwhile, concerns remain over the same water quality.
05:40
Tuesday's triathlon competitions could be postponed, but organisers remain optimistic.
05:51
Thousands of mourners have attended the funerals for 11 of the 12 youngsters killed in a rocket
05:58
strike from Lebanon that struck a football field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights
06:02
on Saturday.
06:04
The Israeli military said the attack was the deadliest on civilians in Israel since the
06:08
war with Hamas started last October.
06:12
Israel said its intelligence showed that the Lebanese group Hezbollah was responsible for
06:16
the strike and promised a retaliation.
06:19
Hezbollah is a messenger of Iran in the region.
06:23
Hezbollah will not make up for this event, even in its most violent attacks.
06:28
He fired the shot, he paid the price, and he will pay a heavy price for his actions.
06:34
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a trip to the United States to return
06:39
to Israel to chair an emergency security cabinet meeting.
06:44
It authorized Netanyahu's government to decide on the manner and timing of the response.
06:51
Hezbollah rushed to deny any involvement in Saturday's strike, which has raised fears
06:56
of starting a broader regional war in the Middle East.
06:59
Speaking in Tokyo, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there was no justification
07:05
for terrorism, but cautioned against escalation.
07:09
We also don't want to see the conflict escalate.
07:10
We don't want to see it spread.
07:11
That has been one of our goals from day one, from October 7th on, and we'll continue to
07:20
do that.
07:21
And Lebanon's Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib said on Sunday that the government had asked
07:25
Washington to urge restraint from Israel in a bid to calm the situation.
07:31
Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel the day after the Hamas incursion into Israel
07:35
on October 7th, it says, in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
07:41
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed more than 500 people, mostly Hezbollah members,
07:46
but also around 90 civilians.
07:49
On the Israeli side, 22 soldiers and 24 civilians have been killed.
07:57
Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians gathered in Kyiv to commemorate the second
08:02
anniversary of an explosion that killed more than 50 Ukrainians detained by Russia in the
08:07
Olenivka prison barracks.
08:10
Soldiers at the ceremony urged the Ukrainian government to work harder to get soldiers
08:15
freed in prisoner exchanges.
08:17
The Olenivka explosion was one of the most painful pages in the history of Russia's ongoing
08:23
invasion of Ukraine, according to many soldiers.
08:27
Russia claimed the explosion was caused by Kyiv's forces firing a missile, but increasing
08:32
evidence instead suggests that Russia was responsible for setting off the blast.
08:37
Two years after, many Ukrainians still want to know exactly how it happened.
08:43
The event in the centre of Kyiv drew together many families, including the mothers, wives
08:48
and children of soldiers who were killed in the blast, or of those who are currently imprisoned
08:54
by Russia.
08:59
Hundreds of dancers from nine countries attended the International Folklore Festival in Romania.
09:07
Mexican guitars, Greek flutes, Czech violins and Romanian shouts could be heard at the
09:12
opening of the 12th edition of the country's International Folklore Festival.
09:20
Nine countries sent performers to represent them at the festival.
09:26
Most of the 300 dancers who were sent to show their talent and passion for folklore at the
09:31
festival were in Romania for the first time.
09:36
Residents of the town where the festival is held look forward to it every year, especially
09:42
because the talent changes each time the festival happens.
09:47
After a weekend full of music and dances from performers gathered from around the world,
09:52
the festival ended with a laureates' gala.
09:58
Bomb shelters on the beach is what a holiday in Odessa, Ukraine looks like.
10:03
Authorities intend to grant permits for around 20 Ukrainian beaches to open this year, subject
10:09
to the fulfilment of strict security conditions.
10:12
While people shouldn't use the beaches for recreation according to the authorities, it
10:17
still doesn't prevent people from relaxing on the beach.
10:20
The Ukrainian tourism sector was devastated by Russia's invasion, and many hotels still
10:25
can't legally open due to bans which can be financially crippling.
10:34
At least 12 people have been killed after a mudslide hit a house in southeastern China
10:40
as heavy rains continue in the aftermath of Typhoon Gemi.
10:45
The deaths are the first reported in China after the typhoon made landfall on Thursday
10:49
and was downgraded to a tropical storm.
10:53
Before reaching China, the typhoon intensified monsoon rains in the Philippines, leaving
10:57
at least 34 dead.
10:59
It then barreled across Taiwan, where authorities said on Saturday that the death toll had risen
11:04
to 10.
11:10
Indonesia's President Joko Widodo has arrived in the country's new capital, Nusantara, to
11:16
start work in his new office.
11:19
Construction of the city began in 2022 after Widodo announced that Jakarta would no longer
11:24
have capital status.
11:26
The metropolis suffers from pollution and congestion, is prone to earthquakes and is
11:31
rapidly sinking.
11:33
But the Nusantara project has been criticized by environmentalists, who say it degrades
11:38
the environment.
