00:10in Netflix's One Piece.

00:17For this list, we'll be looking at the biggest changes made across Netflix's new adaptation

00:22of Eiichiro Oda's legendary manga.

00:25Watch out for spoilers on the horizon.

00:29Number 10 – Random Naked Helmeppo Probably not the fanservice fans might have

00:39been expecting, but here it is – Helmeppo bearing it all for the East Blue while posing

00:45with Zoro's sword.

00:50Not sure what else we can say here other than… enjoy?

01:00Number 9 – Buggy's Circus In order to fit the entirety of the East

01:04Blue arc into eight episodes, a lot had to be condensed, and that included the Straw

01:09Hats' adventures on Orange Island.

01:15While they certainly allude to its destruction, the majority of the battle with Buggy takes

01:19place in his man-made circus, while he holds the town's inhabitants captive as an audience.

01:26Sorry for those who wanted to see the Zoro vs. Kabuji fight in full, but the spotlight

01:31here is firmly placed on Buggy, which is probably for the best since Jeff Ward as the Killer

01:41Clown is an absolute scene stealer.

01:58Number 8 – The Bar Fight Shellstown in general had plenty of scenes

02:03shuffled around, but this is by far the most noticeable.

02:07Instead of being shown in a flashback to explain how Zoro ended up captured by the Marines,

02:13the fight between Zoro and Helmeppo in a bar takes place in real time, with both Luffy

02:18and Nami acting as witnesses.

02:24The fight is fast, fluid and fun, and despite being an inverse of the source material, works

02:30well enough on its own as it reaches the same destination.

02:39They even manage to fit in the rice ball scene.

02:57Number 7 – Mihawk Now this throws for a loop.

03:02Originally, Mihawk made his first appearance at Barati, slicing down Dunkerique's crew

03:08before battling it out with Zoro, making a hell of a first impression in the process

03:13as the world's greatest swordsman.

03:15In the live action, he still arrives at the Barati, but on orders from Gob to capture

03:20Luffy.

03:30Though that's hardly the most shocking moment, as we also get a cameo from Dunkerique.

03:50Considering how he was replaced as a villain of the Barati arc in place of Arlong, using

03:55him as a means to demonstrate Mihawk's power was quite the surprise.

04:00We even got to see him slice a ship in half.

04:09Number 6 – Nami in Shellstown The Straw Hat's beloved navigator doesn't

04:15canonically join Luffy and Zoro until after the events with Buggy in Orangetown.

04:24But in the live action, she's a major player during the fight with the Marines in Shellstown

04:30in episode 1.

04:42While this means there's a lot less of her playing both sides, the series does double

04:47down on the characteristics from the get-go.

04:49She's a thief, she's quick on her feet, she's lovably sarcastic, they even manage

05:07to hint at some of her trauma in a way that feels natural.

05:16It's certainly one of the most obvious alterations, but a combination of great pacing and Emily

05:24Rudd's pitch-perfect performance really makes it work.

05:28Number 5 – No War at the Shore The culmination of the Syrup Village arc, as

05:33any fan will know, is the Straw Hats taking on Kuro and his feline henchmen, with a beach

05:39backdrop serving as their battleground.

05:48For the live-action series, they chose to go with a much smaller, focused conflict.

06:02The Straw Hats are instead trapped inside of Kaya's mansion, Mary is permanently

06:07killed off, and there's no Jango to speak of.

06:11In doing so, this series goes for a bigger emphasis on horror, as they're hunted by

06:15Kuro, who is so deliciously evil that it's impossible to not be entertained.

06:28And hey, at least we got to see Zorro fight Bucci and Charm.

06:43Number 4 – Battle at the Barati As stated before, Don Krieg isn't a major

06:48antagonist in the live-action adaptation.

06:51Instead, they decided to use the shortened time frame to further build up Arlong as the

06:56first season's big bad.

07:02Not only did we see him interrogate Buggy, but had him and his fish-man arrive at the

07:07Barati for a pre-Arlong Park showdown against Luffy.

07:11This not only serves to establish Arlong's motivation, world-building regarding fish-man

07:16persecution, as well as the reveal of Nami being one of his crew, but the fight itself

07:31is a pretty decent one.

07:37If only forgetting to see Taz Skylar's Sanji go shirtless.

07:41Holy mutton-shot.

07:43Number 3 – Kobe Oh, you thought you wouldn't see Kobe after

07:46the first episode?

07:49You'd be wrong.

07:59The Netflix series made the interesting choice to have Kobe and his arc be a secondary focus

08:05of the first season, by having him be interwoven into the events of not only Shellstown, but

08:11also the incidents with Kuro and Arlong.

08:18While there was every danger this could be an unwanted distraction, the time dedicated

08:22to Kobe fills in the blanks on how he and Hal Meppo develop a friendship, and how he

08:27eventually found the courage to be the kind of marine he always wanted to be.

08:32It's a nice touch that doubles as world-building for newcomers, and the extra scenes between

08:36Kobe and Luffy are a plus.

08:43Number 2 – Zorro vs. Mr. Seven

08:46Talk about a deep dive.

09:00For those who were concerned that the showrunners weren't going to do their due diligence,

09:04and do the right thing by the source material, then we kindly refer you to Zorro's introduction,

09:09where he effortlessly cuts down a member of Baroque Works.

09:17For long-term fans, the fight between the Pirate Hunter and Mr. Seven was only ever

09:22referenced in a throwaway line during the confrontation at Whiskey Peak.

09:40Instead of just being a reference, it's brought to life in live action as a way to

09:44display Zorro's immense skills, as well as an indication at how graphic the violence

09:50in this show can get.

10:00That's right, Garp is a major character in the first season of live-action One Piece.

10:19We're not talking about a cameo here – he and Kobe's pursuit of the Straw Hats is

10:38an entire narrative thread from the season's beginning to its end.

10:42As opposed to his manga debut, which took a hell of a long time to arrive at.

10:57And yes, we do get the reveal about him being Luffy's grandfather as early on as the season's

11:03mid-point.

11:04While we're not sure how this will affect the show going forward, we do know one thing

11:14– Vincent Reagan is an absolute delight in the role.

11:24To the extent we're pretty sold on Garp canonically having a Scottish accent.
