Hello and welcome to another edition of UK Crime Caught on Camera. This time we're covering
00:08
have-a-go heroes, folks who stood up for themselves or others in the face of criminal danger.
00:30
What you're watching here is West Midlands police officers attempting to detain an aggressive
00:35
man on the streets of Birmingham when suddenly another becomes involved. He attacks the police
00:43
with a bicycle. The police try to bring the man under control but he then throws a bowl
00:49
of fruit from a nearby stall at an officer. But that's when shopkeeper Abdul Gildari stepped
00:59
in and brought the man to the ground. He said he got angry when the man threw his fruit.
01:05
In the aftermath, one officer can be seen on the ground with a head injury. The bicycle attacker
01:16
was jailed for six months for two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and possession
01:22
of cannabis. The man who officers were detaining initially was jailed for three
01:29
counts of aggravated bodily harm and put behind bars for seven months.
01:37
Mr. Gildari, father of six and originally from Afghanistan, said,
01:43
When I saw he took my bowl, it shook me up. One hook and I had him on the floor. I was angry.
01:49
I helped the police and he went down. More police came and took the men away. This is my business.
01:56
I love my country and I wanted to help the police, help my job and my business.
02:04
I have run this business for a year now. I've never had this before.
02:08
People usually have respect and there's no problem.
02:26
This is the moment a gun-wielding robber threatens staff and robbed a store in West Yorkshire.
02:34
He steals cash from a till and also steals a woman's car keys. Prior to this,
02:38
he robbed two men. Yet it's what happens next that stops him in his tracks.
02:46
Shop worker Niall Stranix, aged 61, is mopping the floor in the background here as the robber
02:52
is in the middle of threatening his female colleague and demanding cash.
02:57
Big Niall grabs the robber from behind and throws him off balance and even wrestles him back despite
03:02
the continued attack and presence of a gun. Now the pistol had started to break apart
03:07
as the two fought and was later believed to have been a plastic BB gun.
03:13
The man was forced to flee the scene empty-handed with Niall still in pursuit.
03:18
Officers later nabbed the robber. He pled guilty to robbery,
03:22
firearms, assault and driving offences and was jailed for 10 years.
03:42
Now we're back in the West Midlands where we're about to see a brave individual take on a burglar
03:47
wielding a machete. The man stepping out of the car there had just carried out a shop raid where
03:53
he stole £15,000 worth of cigarettes and a safe. He takes the safe from the boot and tries to smash
04:01
it open. However, the crooks are disturbed by a man who comes into the yard early for work.
04:09
The burglar then goes to confront the worker fearing he and his crew have been busted
04:16
and moments later he legs it back to his car and pulls out a foot-long machete.
04:23
He then charges at the worker who is currently off screen but as you see from his reaction
04:30
our have-a-go hero has his own weapon, a plank of wood. He chases after the machete thug
04:37
and sends him running. Police later did rumble the burglar and a search of his vehicle found
04:42
tools used in the burglary plus cash and Viagra tablets stolen from the shop.
04:51
He was later jailed for four years. The hero worker wasn't named but was nominated for a
04:57
bravery award by West Midlands Police in recognition of his courage.
05:07
This next video contains no footage of the attack itself but does contain graphic imagery and a
05:20
first-hand account of a violent encounter from TV actor David Pugh where he describes defending his
05:27
home against machete-wielding burglars in 2020. Viewer discretion is advised.
05:33
It's about three o'clock on Monday morning, heard a loud bang. I thought some furniture had
05:40
gone over in my son's room so I dashed out of bed, dark naked as you are in bed,
05:47
and as I approached my door it was kicked in very violently and the landing was just
05:54
full of four guys in balaclavas. Just instinctively went for them,
06:00
we ended up having a sort of ongoing battle in the bathroom on the landing, you know, I was fighting
06:07
one, I was getting hit on the back of the head by another which is what caused all the blood in the
06:11
bathroom, I had several bad cuts to my head. Desperately really trying to reach my son's
06:17
room because he's 17 and he had his girlfriend with him and I didn't know what was going on.
06:22
Three o'clock in the morning you wake up, you just don't expect things like this.
06:28
So we had this sort of ongoing battle for a while and then in between they'd kicked all the doors
06:34
in so every door frame's ruined and there's blood everywhere. We told them there was, you know,
06:41
there's no money, there's nothing in the house so just to get out and I think it's probably only
06:47
went on five or six minutes but it was very violent, very brutal. There was a machete, there was
06:54
baseball bats, there was a golf club and I think in the end, I think I can only assume,
07:01
see me just covered in blood. I just assume they thought they'd come too far or panicked or
07:09
whatever and realised there was nothing in the house anyway and they, to avoid the cameras,
07:15
they smashed the side window in the porch and escaped out that way.
07:26
This dramatic footage shows the moment a duo of thugs, one of whom is armed with a shotgun,
07:32
are sent packing by a shopkeeper and his cricket bat. Tony Banger jumped into action after the
07:39
thugs burst into his store and demanded money from the till. Despite the presence of a shotgun,
07:45
Mr Banger courageously grasped the weapon as the gunman tried to pull the trigger.
07:51
He then instinctively grabbed the cricket bat which was lying on the counter after playing
07:56
in the park with his kids before chasing the raiders out of the shop. His wife and kids were
08:02
upstairs during the ordeal. The duo of thugs were jailed for a combined total of 10 years.
08:09
This is a shocking moment, a thug wearing a sinister clown mask burst into an off-license
08:24
wielding a knife before being foiled by another have-a-go hero, shopkeeper.
08:31
The clown thug went in hoping to scare the worker but the brave shop worker was having none of it.
08:38
He refused to hand over the cash and fought off the clown with his bare hands.
08:43
As the brawl ensued, the pair knocked into displays
08:47
bringing them crashing down, scattering food and other items across the floor.
08:51
Scattering food and other items across the floor.
08:57
But the shop worker got the upper hand and was able to hold the thug down until police arrived.
09:04
He received a two-inch cut in his leg, was part of a tooth and suffered other cuts and bruises.
09:10
The thug pled guilty to attempted robbery and possession of a bladed article and was jailed
09:15
for five years. The thug's defense said he was high on cocaine and heroin at the time.
09:23
The defense also explained that he didn't intend for a confrontation to happen
09:27
and that the clown mask and knife were a scare tactic. Also adding the thug was horrified when
09:33
the shopkeeper reacted how he did and tried to flee from the shop several times.
10:03
This shocking CCTV footage shows a dad of two having a weapon pointed at his face
10:10
as his scared young daughters look on.
10:15
Sibu Kuruvilla said he had been helping colleague Najib Nassar
10:19
pose up for the evening when the masked job entered the store. He demanded cash and was armed.
10:26
The shopkeeper told his daughters to hide away in the office as he bravely approached the man.
10:33
He was then able to use a secret panic alarm as he opened the till
10:37
before ripping the gun from the robber's hands and throwing him to the ground.
10:43
A five-minute struggle ensued during which a magazine rack toppled over
10:47
and Sibu's colleague was repeatedly hit over a head with a bottle of Prosecco.
10:55
They were finally able to overpower and detain the man before waiting for the police to arrive.
11:00
The thug was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison
11:04
after admitting to four related robberies and five counts of possession of an imitation firearm.
11:11
The bravery of the shop owner was later commended at the Chief Constable's award ceremony in 2019.
