00:00Morning everybody, Alex is going to make a statement and then we'll take a few
00:08questions. Well obviously not an announcement I wanted to make by any
00:18means. Yeah I'm devastated but I had to pull out due to hip injury, a little
00:34tear of the fiber cartilage that kind of is at the end or connects to the
00:45adductor. I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against
01:02Philz and got a scan yesterday and it confirmed that this was the injury and
01:12with yeah high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court so yeah.
01:22Courtney? Very sorry to hear that Alex. What does it mean, this was a big big moment in your career,
01:32you've also got another big moment in a month or so, what are you talking about
01:36in terms of the Olympics etc? If I'm completely honest I don't know. They
01:43haven't been able to tell me a definite recovery plan because it's such a unique
01:54injury. It's based on pain a little, right now it can be anywhere from you
02:08know three to six weeks, it just depends on how quickly my body heals. Hey Alex,
02:17sorry about all this. I mean I think I know the answer to the
02:23question given that you said this is based on pain. Was there any chance that
02:28you could that you could have taken doing done things that athletes do
02:34these days taking painkillers and willed their way on to the through tempted
02:40excited we all know how desperately you probably want to pay this play this
02:43match or was this just an absolute no-brainer? Well it's no secret that
02:47this at this stage of my career was the biggest match of my career right so
02:54wanted to do anything I could to play. I caught the results yesterday I knew what
03:03the results were yesterday but I still wanted to wake up today hoping that I
03:07would feel some sort of miracle and not feel feel it whilst I'm walking right
03:17now. The problem with me going out and playing is that one stretch, one slide,
03:28one anything can make this injury go from three to six weeks to four months
03:37so it's yes it was too much to risk. Willie? How would you describe what
03:44you've gone through physically and emotionally in the last two days? Yes
03:53it's devastating no way to beat around the bush I've gone from you know
04:04achieving well I haven't really been able to enjoy what I've achieved this
04:09week because I knew I knew as soon as I felt that pop I knew something bad had
04:18happened so it's been two days of just worrying and just waiting to see what
04:28the results showed and in the grand scheme of things it could have been
04:34worse so I'm trying to hold on to that. Alex we're all we're all devastated for
04:42you I'm sorry to hear the news. I watched your practice this morning you
04:46mentioned you wanted to see if there was a miracle there did that confirm it for
04:50you when you stepped on the court or did you know even before? I mean I've I've
04:56been struggling to sleep the last couple days so I feel it walking just hoping
05:03that I would wake up and feel it a little bit less or feel it to a point
05:10where I can at least go on court but again you know I'm I think it's almost
05:22disrespectful for me to not go on the court close to a hundred percent against
05:27someone like Novak because there's no point of me going out there if you know
05:34I'm not going out there to try and and win. Sorry to hear this Alex but um have
05:41you had an injury like this before do you know what you're dealing with? No this
05:45is a completely unique new injury that they've got very little research on it's
05:56it's four years worth of research therefore that's why they couldn't give
06:01me a approximate on recovery time it's it's more just a little bit of hope wait
06:11and see so yes it's quite a unique injury that I'm hoping the the pain goes
06:21down with a bit of rest and then ultimately it's it's kind of working
06:32against the clock to get back as soon as possible. Alex so sorry to hear the news
06:39can you pinpoint exactly where it is on your hip that you feel the pain? Yeah it's
06:47it's quite high up it's it's almost where the adductor and the ab the kind
06:55of insertion there that's where I feel it yeah it kind of happened on a when I
07:05slid out to a forehand and created a lot of force and heard that crack which
07:13yeah knew it was never gonna be something good. Have you had a chance to
07:19speak to Novak or his camp to reveal to this before the announcement? Yeah my
07:25plan always from from the start was if I didn't feel great yesterday so I knew I
07:35was I needed a miracle this morning so that's why I wanted to make sure when I
07:42did warm up and I gave myself a chance I warmed up as early as possible so I knew
07:49as early as possible what my decision was gonna be so I didn't see Novak at
07:57the courts yet I saw his his manager and I just let him know but yeah I haven't
08:06seen Novak yet. Alex sorry to hear about your injury you said you haven't had much time to
08:11process what's going on in the tournament so far in terms of positives
08:14I just ask you what would you say have been the positives in the week in terms of your level?
08:20Probably the positives is that I'm playing these tournaments and I'm I'm in the deep
08:31end of them it's probably what hurts so much more knowing that I'm I feel close
08:39right closer than probably ever before I feel like you know I'm putting myself in
08:48these positions and you know it's a shame that I can't go out there and play so the
08:54positives is I make back-to-back quarterfinals at slams and I'm getting to the deep end of
09:02these these tournaments more frequently and it's yeah it's where I want to be.
09:08Is there anything to say about the quality of the courts with that slip?
09:16I think you've answered this a bit yesterday just to continue on that and also do you have
09:21a message for your British fans who really take with your success taking under their
09:26Yeah I think this injury it's it's more of a freak injury it's an excessive amount of
09:36force made to to slide on a grass court I only did this because at the time it was as match point
09:47right so I just went for it for a slide that was probably a little bit more than than normal
09:55and it's something that you know there was no signs of any fatigue any problems beforehand
10:05it's just yeah happened on a freak moment to the British fans that have supported me
10:14well obviously extremely disappointed then I couldn't go out there and keep on competing but
10:20yeah I felt I felt the love I felt great playing in front of them I felt like this
10:28has always been a very special place for me and you know I'm hoping for the years to come
10:35I've got more and more to show at this tournament and you never know hopefully go quite day one
10:42Alex you talked about the three to six week timeline how quickly your body recovers but
10:48can you give us an idea of what you actually have to do to try to rehab the injury try to
10:53get back faster what will the process be from here well the body needs to naturally heal so
11:00the tear needs to naturally heal there's that process and there's the process of rehabbing
11:07the area around it and kind of you know helping it be safe it's an injury that that is all based
11:20on on pain on my pain so I've got to do exercises that don't irritate the area more and it allows
11:31it to heal so that's why it's kind of all up to myself and my body how quickly it heals and I'm in
11:42the past similar injuries that maybe I've had with osteitis pubis I've come back sooner than than
11:52expected so I'm I'm hoping that's the case for this one as well I've spoken to Nick Kurios about
11:59his comeback it sounds like he's getting closer and what he's saying about it and what your hopes
12:04are for his return to the tour yeah I've seen him hitting I think you know he looks like he's he's
12:14feeling a lot better as far as I know I think the US hardcourt is when he's planning to return I
12:27don't know the exact specifics but you know it'll all be depending on his his injury and how he's
12:34how he's feeling
