Telford primary school takes on Wrekin challenge for charity

Pupils and teachers from Newdale Primary School have taked on Telford's most iconic hill to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

00:00Head teacher at Newdale? I am, yeah.

00:02And what's going on? A bit of a military operation here this morning, isn't it?

00:05It is, yeah. We've got the first coach load has just arrived.

00:08So these are our youngest, our Year 1's.

00:10And they're beginning their journey up to the top of the Reekin.

00:14All for a good cause, for Macmillan.

00:16For Macmillan, yes. And then we've got the next coach loads.

00:18We've got Year 2's and 3's right behind us.

00:22And then Year 4, 5 and 6 will be following shortly.

00:25So we'll have around about 360 children walking to the top of the Reekin.

00:29And the sun's out for you, well.

00:31Well it's perfect, isn't it? Typical July weather.

00:33Yeah, exactly.

00:34And at the top you're going to be doing something very special aren't you?

00:37Creating a heart with the shape of the children.

00:39That's right. We're doing this in support of the charity Macmillan.

00:44Yeah, hence the significance of the heart then and the colour ratio.

00:49Yeah, so the colour ratio. The children are dressed in red or white.

00:52And we've got half of them in red, half of them in white in the ratio of 1 to 2.

00:56Because across our country, unfortunately, that is the ratio that people are affected by cancer within their lifetime.

01:041 in 2 people, which is awful.

01:06But thankfully we have charities such as Macmillan that support those people and those families.

01:12And so we are all out today in support of Macmillan.

01:16Fantastic. And you've even got a catering team who've gone up ahead in four wheel drives.

01:20Putting picnic tables out at the top, yeah?

01:23That's right. Let's Dine Catering have supported us as well as other people as well.

01:28We've got the police, traffic enforcement, all sorts of people.

01:31And we've also got two drones going up later to get some, we hope, weather permitting.

01:37It's not too misty. We're going to get some really good photographs of the heart as well.

01:43Yeah.

01:44You ready for the big challenge? The epic trek?

01:46Yeah.

01:48Who's excited to be walking up there?

01:50Me!

01:53Who's got good strong legs?

01:55Me!

01:57Not me. My legs wobble.

01:59Your legs wobble? It's too early for your legs to be wobbling.

02:03So what are you looking forward to most up there?

02:05Doing the big heart and the big picture or your picnic?

02:07The picnic.

02:15Has anybody been doing any special training? Any extra walking?

02:18Yeah.

02:19Have you? Have you been doing some extra walking?

02:22Have you walked up the reeking before?

02:25Yeah.

02:26Have you? So you know it's good workout, isn't it?

02:30So you're the Macmillan gang. How are you doing guys?

02:33Yeah, really good today. Thank you.

02:35What do you think about what the school have put together? It's quite epic, isn't it really?

02:40Well, we were just saying that the operation of all the bits and bobs to pull it all together is just absolutely incredible.

02:47It's taken so much time and effort and they've already raised over £2,000, I think, which is going to make a massive difference.

02:54It's fantastic.

02:55Are you guys trekking up?

02:57We are. No, we're running up.

02:59We haven't done it for a while, but we're going to give it a go.

03:01Well, do you remember it? It is a good workout.

03:03I remember that. I can still feel the pain just thinking about it from when I last did it.

03:08It's the least we can do because it's just amazing what they're doing.

03:12And the weather's, it's easing off now, isn't it?
