00:00The taste of garlic is not just in the kitchen, but it can also be used at home.

00:06Yes, this is Garlic of a Kind, a project led by Bernadette Reyes.

00:16In cooking, garlic is a must, and its peel is just thrown away.

00:22But UP Cebu Fine Arts student, Clint, has a bright idea to give the garlic peel a new appeal.

00:29So my thesis, I was tasked to explore on materials that can potentially be developed into products.

00:38There are a lot of garlic peels at the carbon market of Cebu City.

00:42Garlic peel is rich in fiber.

00:45So I was thinking, maybe I can turn this into sheets.

00:48After a long process, the skin of the garlic became like thin paper,

00:54which he later used to make table lamps, tables, and tiles.

00:59But since the skin of the garlic also looks like onion skin when crushed, he discarded it to make it stronger.

01:07I had to mix it with 20-25% of avocado in order to stabilize the sheets.

01:14But for Clint, this is not just a thesis project.

01:18According to the 2024 Food Waste Index Report of the UN Environment Programme,

01:22the household food waste of the Philippines is at 2.95 million tons per year.

01:27That's why his project is timely.

01:30Not only does it reduce the garbage that is being destroyed in the environment,

01:34making home decorations with garlic peel can also provide livelihood and income.
