00:00Plans to turn offices in a shopping centre into student flats will soon be discussed
00:06by Leeds City Council. An office building in the St John's Centre could be converted
00:11to house 287 students under the scheme.
00:14Albion Leeds Ltd has applied for planning permission for the project, which includes
00:19studio flats and shared living spaces. A consultation document said the scheme would bring an under-used
00:26building back into use and help boost the city centre economy. It said large parts of
00:31the existing office space remain empty due to changing work patterns and there is limited
00:36demand from new occupiers. The scheme would include a 950 square metre courtyard with
00:41landscaped areas, with student residents able to enjoy a private rooftop garden.
00:47The proposal would not affect existing retail space at the centre, which was built in the
00:511980s, with the commercial units remaining fully operational and unaffected by the proposals.
