00:00 Without objection, the gentleman is recognized for one minute. Thank You
00:04 Madam Speaker. Well if you've observed the West during the summer or fall
00:08 months the last few years, maybe longer than that, you would see that fire season
00:14 is soon upon us and it's had devastating effects. One example would be a 1 million
00:19 acre fire, one fire of a million acres in my district just three short years ago.
00:25 So what are we doing as a federal government to combat that? Moving pretty
00:31 slowly. The US Forest Service under its watch has allowed, due to lack of ability
00:37 to get access to the forest and get the type of board feet out that needs to
00:41 happen, we've seen the last 15 months 50 individual sawmill closures since March
00:47 of 2020, well up to March. So with all these closures,
00:54 1,500 sawmills have closed since the year 2000. Where is the capacity going to
00:59 be to process these logs and turn them into something useful if the private
01:04 sector isn't allowed to take enough harvest because of Forest Service lack
01:09 of action? So million acre fires, imports. The US is now number one in imported wood.
01:15 We have all this wood standing out there. It makes no sense. We got to move much
01:19 quicker. I yield back. The gentleman yields back. For what purpose does the gentleman
01:24 from Indiana seek recognition.
