Former Melbourne track and field athlete made Australian history as best female bob-sledder

A former track and field athlete from suburban Melbourne is milliseconds away from being the best female bob-sledder in the world. Bree Walker made Australian history when she won world cup gold with the last race of the season.

00:00 Bree Walker always wanted to win gold, she just didn't expect it to be in a bobsled.

00:07 Bree back in the day would never have imagined that I would be doing what I'm doing now.

00:13 This is where it all began, at the Mount Evelyn Athletics Track an hour east of Melbourne.

00:18 Bree grew up here, dreaming of Olympic glory over 400 metres.

00:23 But when injury set her back...

00:25 I just simply googled if we had an Australian bobsled team.

00:29 She's been pushing to win ever since.

00:32 The end game is medal at the Olympics, for sure.

00:38 She's on track, ending this year's bobsleigh season with a World Cup gold and the number two ranking in the world.

00:45 But it almost didn't happen.

00:47 The funding kind of ran out before Lake Placid.

00:50 So Bree funded herself.

00:52 I'm very glad that I did that because it was definitely the highlight of my season.

00:57 And probably the highlight of my career so far.

01:01 After a short break to celebrate, it's straight back to business.

01:05 You never have to be motivating or get her to do the work.

01:10 It's very technical coaching because she has the drive.

01:13 Which is finessed by Bree's mentor and mindset coach, gold medalist Lydia Lassler.

01:18 I think most athletes would say that the physical is like 20% but on game day it's like 80% mind.

01:27 Bree will work on both when she moves to Calgary next month to train with her new push coach.
