Proud Moment For India: Payal Kapadia Sets History With Grand Prix Award At Cannes 2024

Payal Kapadia created history as the first Indian filmmaker to win Grand Prix, second highest title of the Cannes for her movie 'All We Imagine As Light'.

00:00 Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has brought a proud moment for India by bringing the Grand Prix home.

00:08 Payal Kapadia's film, All We Imagine as Life, won the second highest award of the Cannes Film Festival 2024.

00:17 Scripting history by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix,

00:23 it was awarded to Payal and the team at the closing ceremony of the film festival on Sunday, 25 May.

00:30 All We Imagine as Life by Payal Kapadia became the first film to compete in the main competition for the Pan Diyar title after 30 years.

00:41 Prior to this, Shahji and Karun's Swaham was the last film to compete in the main competition in 1994.

00:50 Kapadia's All We Imagine as Life is a story of three ladies portrayed by Kani Khusruthi, Divya Prabha and Jhaya Kadam.

01:01 It premiered at Cannes on 23 May and received 8 minutes of standing ovation.

01:08 While receiving this award, Payal expressed herself.

01:12 She said, "I'm nervous, so I wrote something down.

01:16 Thank you to the Cannes Film Festival for having our film here.

01:20 Please don't wait 30 years to have another Indian film.

01:23 This film is about friendship, about three very different women.

01:28 Oftentimes, women are beated against each other.

01:31 This is the way our society is designed and it is really unfortunate.

01:36 But for me, friendship is a very important relationship because it can lead to greater solidarity,

01:44 inclusivity and empathy."

01:46 She also thanked her fellow team mates without whom the project would be incomplete.

01:52 Her victory is almost celebrated as a festival in India.

01:56 It is indeed a proud moment for the country.

02:05 "An alumnus of FTII, her remarkable talent continues to shine on the global stage,
