I'm always talking about how food is medicine,
00:02
but sometimes the most potent foods don't have to be fresh.
00:06
Some of the most powerful cancer fighters in the world
00:08
are found right in your pantry.
00:10
They keep, they're cheap, and they're easy to grab.
00:13
And you know what?
00:13
Some of them come in cans.
00:15
So here to review the best cancer-fighting foods
00:17
that you must keep in your pantry is Dr. Will Clower.
00:19
He's a leading nutritionist and founder
00:21
of the Mediterranean Wellness Initiative.
00:23
Thank you for joining us.
00:24
Thank you.
00:25
So talk to me a little bit about cancer-fighting foods
00:27
and why you think they're so important
00:29
to keep in our pantries.
00:30
Well, it's critical.
00:30
When I talk to people all over the country,
00:32
what I find is that the number one problem
00:34
they come up to me with is they'll say,
00:36
I can't make good foods that's good for me
00:39
because it's too expensive and it takes too long.
00:42
The thing I love about this segment
00:44
is that everything you have here
00:46
are things that are cheap, they keep, like you said,
00:49
and they're delicious too.
00:51
All right, so come on back here.
00:52
Dr. Clower has three groups of foods
00:54
you can store in your pantry to reduce your risks of cancer.
00:57
The first pantry must have
00:59
if you're gonna reduce your chance of cancer
01:00
are foods that have orange colors to them.
01:02
Now, why is that?
01:03
All oranges have beta-carotene in them,
01:05
and the beta-carotene is a massive antioxidant.
01:08
Antioxidants in your body,
01:10
what they do is they clean up the toxins.
01:12
They clean up the waste products of the cells in your body.
01:15
It's kind of like the antioxidants,
01:17
they're like the garbage men of your body.
01:19
They pick it up, they clean it up,
01:20
so that garbage doesn't build, build, build,
01:23
and lead to chronic diseases like cancer.
01:25
All right, so very specifically,
01:26
you picked pumpkin,
01:27
and you picked a butternut squash product as well.
01:30
Yeah, fabulous, fabulous.
01:31
Both of these have lots of potassium,
01:35
good for your heart, good for a lot of things,
01:37
and all the beta-carotenes that are great for you.
01:39
And if you get that butternut squash,
01:41
you throw it in a pan, and when you do that,
01:43
what you do is you stick a little stick,
01:45
this is a secret.
01:45
Please tell me, I love secrets.
01:47
You stick a little stick of cinnamon in there,
01:49
and then when you get it out,
01:51
you get it with a little crunchy bread,
01:52
a little maybe parmesan cheese on the top.
01:54
Oh, I know, I'm ready to eat now.
01:55
You guys hungry?
01:56
Right.
01:57
Yeah.
01:58
All right, any particular cancers
01:59
have these benefits you for?
02:01
Breast cancer is the one that's the most well-researched.
02:03
Women who eat orange foods,
02:06
their likelihood of breast cancer plummets.
02:08
And it's not supplements.
02:11
These are the data, it's not supplements,
02:13
it's these foods that you can keep in your pantry,
02:16
and then pull out at any point.
02:18
So treat these like medications?
02:19
Totally.
02:20
Give me a dose.
02:21
Totally.
02:22
Three times per week.
02:23
Okay.
02:23
You can do that, right?
02:24
Three times a week.
02:26
Next, must have in your pantry are products
02:28
that are rich in antioxidants like these beans.
02:30
Yes.
02:31
And why'd you pick these in particular?
02:32
Well, all red beans are so high in antioxidants.
02:36
As a matter of fact,
02:37
if you, when you list the top antioxidants on planet Earth,
02:41
three of the top four are beans like these.
02:44
Is that right?
02:45
So not only do, yes,
02:46
and not only do they have the antioxidants,
02:48
but they have two other things
02:50
that are such good cancer fighters.
02:52
One of the things that are in red beans
02:54
include things like,
02:56
there's something that causes your cancer cells
02:58
to commit suicide, cancer cell suicide,
03:03
because of these things
03:03
that you can pull right out of your cupboard.
03:05
You stick it in a pan, you warm it up, you spice it up,
03:07
and you are good to go.
03:08
A little rice.
03:09
Right.
03:10
It's awesome.
03:11
Inexpensive, folks, inexpensive.
03:11
So very specifically,
03:12
which cancers can we help ourselves with with these beans?
03:15
Colon cancer and lung cancer.
03:17
That's one of the biggest ones.
03:18
Yeah, exactly.
03:19
And give me a dose.
03:20
They're medications, give me a dose.
03:21
These also are around three times per week,
03:24
and you need to include these in some way.
03:27
You can include them by throwing them in a chili,
03:29
you can throw them in a stew,
03:30
or you can just get the pintos,
03:32
and you can have them on the side
03:34
as a quick, quick, quick, easy, easy, easy
03:36
side dish for any meal.
03:38
I'm gonna pass these out afterwards.
03:39
Okay, the last packet,
03:40
let's have our cruciferous vegetables.
03:42
This was the one that we thought
03:44
would be most challenging,
03:45
because most folks don't think
03:46
about cruciferous vegetables.
03:47
Right.
03:48
Some of you keep in your pantry,
03:48
but you have a solution.
03:49
How is that possible?
03:50
Well, it's cabbage.
03:52
It has a lot of things that are good for you about cabbage,
03:54
but when you ferment that cabbage,
03:58
and that fermentation leads to sauerkraut,
04:01
that main cancer-fighting molecule in the cabbage degrades,
04:05
and you're thinking, oh, that's awful.
04:07
It degrades, it's bad,
04:08
but the thing it degrades into
04:10
are three or four different cancer fighters.
04:13
It's almost like a Big Daddy cancer fighter
04:17
gave birth to several more cancer fighters,
04:19
and all of them grew up
04:21
and turned out to be working for you,
04:22
killing cancer.
04:23
Nice.
04:25
What cancers, again,
04:26
and give me a rough amount per week we need to take.
04:29
All fermented foods are good for preventing colon cancer,
04:32
and this is no exception.
04:35
In addition to colon cancer,
04:36
this guy helps to also prevent other things
04:39
like prostate cancer and breast cancer.
04:41
Again, we have covered all the big cancer study folks,
04:43
but the problem is you can keep in your pantry.
04:46
Yes, absolutely.
04:47
Well, how many servings a week?
04:49
As often as you can get them.
04:51
It's hard to get an upper limit.
04:52
The problem with things like sauerkraut
04:54
is that people don't know how to eat it anymore.
04:56
They're thinking sauerkraut,
04:57
oh, I see, chili cheese dogs,
04:59
and you're like, really?
05:00
Chili is this?
05:01
That's what?
05:02
But you can have sauerkraut on any sandwich.
05:04
It has a nice crunch, a nice snap,
05:06
and it's got that acidity that breaks up the flavor.
05:08
It's brilliant,
05:09
and you can also have it by itself on the side.
05:13
You mix protein with sauerkraut,
05:14
you can eat just about anything.
05:15
That's right.
05:16
It is good to go.
05:16
It's great with lentils and maybe a little pork chop,
05:19
and if you have those together,
05:21
you've got all that goodness,
05:22
and that probably costs you $4
05:23
and took you 12 minutes to make.
05:25
Dr. Clower, thank you for your time.
05:26
Pleasure.
05:27
Appreciate it very much.
05:28
Thank you for watching.
