London’s food market hidden in the centre of Soho

We head to the lesser known Berwick Street market to marvel at all the different types of food.

00:00 London's food scene is constantly growing and a huge part of enjoying different cuisines

00:08 from around the world is heading down to a street market.

00:13 Now we all know Borough Market and Camden Market, but tucked away in the centre of Soho

00:19 is Berwick Street Market, a hidden gem that has been part of the capital's food scene

00:24 for literally hundreds of years.

00:26 The street market first set up stalls in 1778 but wasn't recognised as a formal marketplace

00:33 until 1892.

00:36 Back then it was most likely selling ingredients, fish and other pastime British foods, however

00:42 these days visitors are spoilt for choice from Greek food to fried chicken, curry and

00:47 Afghani food as well.

00:51 Located in the heart of London's old red light district is a modern day market that

00:55 takes over the street from around 11am to 5pm on Monday to Saturday, but closing on

01:02 a Sunday.

01:03 Surrounded by pubs, bars and trendy shops, workers on their lunch breaks keep flocking

01:08 to the market to pick up some lunch and they are spoilt for choice.

01:13 During the 90s Berwick Street was once recognised as the golden mile for vinyl, it held the

01:19 reputation of being London's number one spot for record dealing.

01:24 Even today as you walk either side of the food vendors you'll see record and vinyl

01:28 shops still thriving even in a more vintage market.

01:33 Over the years Berwick Street Market has been through a lot of changes with the growing

01:38 Even though it may not be as big as it was back in the day, you will still find something

01:43 worthwhile if you make your way down to this district's market.
