00:10with Ruslan Verchuk, I'm Aki Karim, I'm joined by Dan Murray and Chris Maler and
00:14you know something guys I actually, excuse me, I actually MC'd Ruslan Verchuk's
00:20not his last fight, the fight before that when he fought at Levi Giles and he is a
00:24handful he's a good fighter so Jack needs to really be switched on in the
00:29opening stages yeah Jack Bateson's a class act and I'm glad he's in there
00:32with someone who's a handful though you might ask some questions Jack's been out
00:36of the ring for a year now he says he's coming back fitter, stronger, a better
00:40fighter and hopefully we'll see that tonight yeah we've been here a few times
00:45Chris haven't we to watch Jack fight and he's made this his home really this
00:49this arena, a venue so to speak and everyone always comes out to support him
00:54and it's because he's a good good lad and he's a good boxer good solid boxer
00:58isn't he? yeah yeah it's a great venue I've been here a few times to watch Jack
01:03his dad's the promoter obviously and you know does great things for
01:07Leeds and Jack's always had that star quality coming through, had that loss in his
01:12last fight against Shabazz Massoud, what a good fight that was as well I mean I
01:17remember that one, he got stopped in the last round, cruel way to finish but I'm
01:22sure Jack has learnt a lot from that fight and has come back
01:26better for it as well you know better fighter for it but yeah no no no shame in
01:31getting beat by Shabazz Massoud, it was it was a good fight good learning fight and
01:35no shame in that at all yeah one thing about Jack is he's a very
01:40determined fighter he's got a record 17 and 1 I mean he's you know these are the
01:45sort of records where kids you know what they've been in with and they're good
01:49quality fighters, we've actually watched his journey all the way from the
01:51beginning and he's been in there with all sorts of different styles yeah he
01:55came up against Shabazz that night and Shabazz was great that night but Shabazz's
01:58most recent fight you know anyone can have an off night so I'm sure he'll put
02:03that behind him now and he'll be ready to get back in there
02:09he was always a you know coming into the pros he had a name for himself Jack good
02:14amateur part of the GB team of that time, always had great talent and you know
02:21like I say he's got a record now 18 fights as a pro just that one slip up but I say
02:27star quality lots of great skills and you know definitely someone to look out
02:34for always always you know always comes to fight as well and bring bring the
02:37entertainment, he actually came out orthodox which we don't normally see
02:42normally he starts southpaw and then switches or maybe I'm getting it wrong
02:44but I mean he can switch and he effortlessly switches between both I'll
02:49have to ask Bertrand if he feels more comfortable in but yeah we've seen a lot more orthodox from Jack
02:54quality fighter obviously as you've touched on decorated amateur I think he
02:59had 120 fights 100 wins won a ton of ton of titles as well as an amateur and you
03:06can see it in there he's an absolute class act and you know what I don't
03:10think he'll be long before we see him in the big fights again yeah and Russell
03:14and Bertrand gave him his dues as well he's in there doing he's just got caught
03:17with a little left up there on the inside but if he fancies it if he sees
03:21an opportunity he might he might go for it as well a little bit Russell
03:48round two right here we go into round number two Jack Bateson is in there with
03:57Ruslan Berchuk Ruslan 14 wins to his name to be fair you know he does get
04:03that he does get what he wins quite regularly you know obviously now he's
04:07fighting in England against the good kids so you're gonna see the you know
04:11the Reds in the L column but he's a good fighter he comes to fight you can see
04:15that his style he's a come forward fighter he's looking for his shots he's
04:18he's got ambition and if you're not switched on there's a chance he'll turn
04:22you over. What I like there Jack's little half step back I love it when he's in
04:28boxing mode I mean he loves fighting mode as well but I love it when he's in
04:31boxing mode he's very classy to watch very very classy puts his shots together
04:35absolutely brilliantly but big ticket seller big crowd he wants to put a show
04:41on that's a good success with the left hook and that's gonna be a telling shot
04:49I think as this fight goes on that's a nice little shot he's added into his
04:52repertoire you know that short little left hook he's timed it great first few
04:58times he's thrown it again yeah he's just thrown it as a lead there good
05:02forearm control so yes a very good so but there's there is again I think that's
05:05the shot he's chosen tonight they've obviously watched something in Ruslan
05:08Bershuk style switched again. When you experience this Jack is and obviously
05:13with the amateur career he's had he'll be figuring them out himself he's seen
05:17every different style he's been there in there with everyone and he'll be working
05:21them out as he's going along you'll be looking what shots will work and what shots
05:24wouldn't work Harvey obviously as a local man you must know quite a bit about Jack
05:29and we followed his rise from the professional ranks you must have known
05:34him from an amateur or certainly heard of him yeah and I'm aware we were on
05:39team GB as well so obviously he's got a wealth of experience from that and he's
05:44carried it through to the pro ranks and how do you think obviously last time out
05:49he had that disappointing loss against Shabazz which is an absolute quality
05:52fighter how do you expect him to come back from that well look it was in the
05:5712th round it were a stoppage loss obviously he's had a year out the ring
06:02since but he'll be looking to come back stronger from that and I think it's just
06:07a learning curve if anything Shabazz has just just come back to funnily enough
06:12around two weeks ago in Newcastle I watched that fight a bit of a
06:16controversial decision to be honest and could have been a draw in my opinion
06:21against Sam Martin who's come over from Columbia but look he's pushing on to
06:28world level now so there's no shame in losing to someone of that caliber and
06:33it's certainly a fighter Jack could look for down the line isn't it oh
06:36definitely definitely I mean there was a good crowd that turned out I was at that fight in
06:40Sheffield it was in Sheffield I was at the fight it was a good turnout for the
06:44fight maybe they can get it on down the line and but yeah I mean as we say now
06:48he's been out of the ring a while so it's about getting back in there yeah to
06:51be honest he doesn't look like he's been out of the ring that long, no signs of real ring rust
06:55round three
07:22In we go into round number three it leads Ellen Road it's Bateson Promotions in
07:27association with GSW Jack Bateson's getting off to a good start here two
07:32rounds in the bank Ruslan Birchuk though he's still in the argument he's making
07:38Jack work which is what Jack wants is exactly what he wants what he wants what
07:42Jack's team will want don't want him just to come out and come back with a
07:45blowout it's great to see him back and like like what you said at the end of
07:49the round doesn't look like he's been away does it he just looks so relaxed in
07:53there he's got so much ring craft and quality he's just pretty much picked up
07:57where he's left off yeah I mean to throw check left hooks you know you got to have
08:00your timings got to be on and to throw them early so yeah it's good to good what we're
08:04seeing footwork looks good spinning off at the angles as we've seen there he's
08:08a good straight left hand and he's actually in this particular round
08:14really out boxing Birchuk really really letting his quality show now he's
08:19letting the levels show and again Ruslan just doesn't know what to do at
08:23the minute he's coming forward he's making a fight of it but like you said
08:27there Jack is changing the angles he's landing at will almost at the moment and
08:31a good vicious streak which I like you know the referee didn't say break so he
08:33carried on punching throwing the leather and I love to see that because it's a
08:37hurt game at the end of the day for me Jack's had a few rounds now and I'd
08:41probably like to see him get him out there to be honest and I think that's
08:45what he'll be thinking himself and I just think he'll start putting his shots
08:48together and I think he'll be a little bit too much for him really growing in
08:52confidence here you see when someone starts fading like that and getting on
08:54the front foot you know that they're really feeling in the groove he's really
08:57just the distance there as well he's getting comfortable he knows he can land
09:03he knows he's got that distance and I think he's looking to turn turn up a bit
09:07it's like he's almost got his second win but in the third round you know I mean
09:11he's got that spurt of injection of pace a year out you know you want to get back
09:16in there back up back under the crowds and maybe it took him around the two you
09:19know to get back into the swing of things but he's a he looks like he's like
09:24he's never been away and he always looks the part in there and he loves being in
09:28there so good to see him back and he's experienced as well he's had 120 amateur
09:34fights this is he's had 18 pro fights
09:59like I've seen he's got so much experience I think those first two rounds
10:02I think he's just giving Russell some respect working him out and I think now
10:06that he's worked him out he's really going through the gears
10:09it looks like a man who's you know what sometimes when you're just feeling good
10:13inspiring and you just yeah making a mockery of the person in front of you
10:16that looks like the game has just gone into at the minute
10:21do you know what full credit to Russell and some quality quality shots been landed

10:51second time round four and we're going to round number four I think everyone is
10:59liking what they're seeing from Jack Bateson Russell and Bershuk also has a
11:03cut on his left eye which Andy Brooke did signal as a legitimate punch and that
11:09jab stopped Bershuk in his track set
11:15I could see a different look to Jack in this fight you know in his face and he
11:20came in the ring you know when a fighter does have a loss like that and they come back
11:25you know he's rubbing him with that shot
11:29I first thought it was a slip but I think it was just a good clean shot
11:34oh he's a good shot this is not this fight is not going any much longer I don't
11:40think he's just catching him clean now and Bershuk is now holding accurate
11:46yeah I just see a different you know a very mature Jack in it for a year out on the back of that loss
11:53but sometimes a loss can be the making of a man can't it, absolutely, can you sense that
11:59he looks very very focused he's got he's got a point to prove yes you know he's
12:04combined sorry Dan go on mate he's combined the two things I like
12:07sometimes he wants to have a fight and sometimes he boxes beautifully he's
12:10combined them both together today yeah he's fighting beautifully if that makes
12:14sense so he's actually aggressive but he's doing what I always knew he could
12:19do and just be aggressive but beautiful with it like we know with that with the
12:23technique yeah he's timing it perfectly he's knowing when to attack and knowing
12:27when to box isn't he, yeah I like the look of Jack Bateson 2.0 here it's a very good
12:36I must say Chris this is the excited eye I've seen you for a long time, I'm a Jack Bateson fan
12:41it's showing tonight and I can see why because really he's going through the
12:46repertoire but it's it's good it's kind of like cold yeah clinical very clinical
12:53performance and you know we always give credit where credit's due to the opponent but we haven't had much to say because Jack has put him on manners from word one
13:02well he's starting to get to the point now where it's getting a little bit
13:05uncomfortable to see and I think if Jack goes through the gears we might see a
13:09towel come in we might see the referee jump in, he's southpaw orthodox he's
13:14catching him with everything, he's absolutely nailing him now, I remember in the last fight this referee, yeah Andy's a great referee, he won't let him take too much, no he won't
13:26and you can see he's getting closer there, but then Ruslan just at the last minute grabs on
13:33and clinches and does what he needs to do he's on survival mode isn't he, he wants
13:37to fight next week
13:45I can't believe he's got through this, I can't believe it, I probably might like to see it get
13:52stopped, the thing is he's just given enough, he's just given enough to keep the
13:57referee out of it, but we shall see, we shall see
14:14round five
14:30round five at Elland Road, Leeds Elland Road, Jax Bateson is currently on fire
14:37having a bit of a purple patch, Ruslan Birchett we were just saying tough guy
14:42but how much more can he sustain, so let's see
14:55and for the first time in the fight the pace just slowed down a little bit
14:59yeah Jax just having another little look at him, he might want the full six to be
15:04honest, he might want the full six, I know it's strange to say that but you know
15:09sometimes fighters do want the rounds and sometimes they do go out and say you know
15:13we'll go through the gears but we want the rounds, yeah and to be honest it might
15:17be the best for him because he's been out for a year you want to get him in
15:21there you want to get even though he looks fantastic in there you want him to
15:24get the rounds you want him to go through the motions and get his timing
15:28back, having said that there was a right hand that went through that he was trying to knock him clean out
15:35that reminded me for a split second of the one that Mike Tyson threw to Francois Botha
15:40like the way he threw it just like he wanted to just end him there didn't he
15:42you know when you started saying that I thought you're gonna say about when we
15:45sparred he reminded you of that, I didn't start about that because I stayed on my feet, so don't even worry about that
15:50and you did even say I landed a very good body shot on you, you've forgotten all this haven't you
15:54I think we need a rematch, I'm sick of hearing that, no we don't need a rematch
15:58he's such a natural boxer Jack, you know he switches so easily
16:04he's got every trick in the book, when he lets the punches flow and he doesn't force it
16:08yeah, he's such a good fighter, this is why he's always in range because he can switch
16:12he can switch quite seamlessly so when he's going forward and he switches like
16:16it's not unnatural for him, so he can cover the distance very quickly when he's going forward
16:26that's a good shot there, timing, that was all timing
16:30and his corner there like, obviously his dad Mark, you know Keith, Paddy
16:36they're gonna be loving what they're seeing here
16:43you just get a feeling he's one shot away don't you from wobbling him and the ref jumping in
16:49he's a tough man isn't he, he's taken a sustained beating over the last couple of rounds
16:54he's a very very tough man, he's closing the range a little bit better in this round
16:59so he's not taking as much as Flush, which is keeping him in the fight
17:04still sickening shots
17:08Jack's on him, and he's had his stomach off
17:14I tell you what though, he would have carried on the night, he would have carried on
17:17but sometimes fighters need to be safe from themselves
17:19yeah, fighting needs protecting, I mean what a great performance from Jack there
17:23from start to finish pretty much punch perfect, like we said the way he come out
17:28he missed it, he's boxing, he's fighting, he missed it absolutely perfect
17:31then fair play to Ruslan here, he put up a good show and he put up a good fight
17:35but right stoppage at the end there
17:37absolutely, I think so because like I say Ruslan could have carried on
17:41you know he's a tough kid, but you know what's the point
17:44he was getting battered and Jack was just getting more and more confident
17:48so where do you want to see Jack go from here now, do you want to see him
17:51another couple of warm up fights or do you want to see him get back in the mix
17:54I would like to see him have a couple more warm up fights, I would
17:58like to see him back into a massive one and that's not because I don't think
18:00he can go into a big one now, it's just because why rush man
18:03you know he's still young, you know he's still pretty fresh
18:08hot division, got Liam Davis obviously 15 out
18:12that would be a good fight
18:13yeah, Dennis McCann, Andrew Kane
18:15more good fights, get him in them fights, more good fights
18:19that's great to see him back, back up here in Leeds
18:23yeah let's hope he can get in that mix, in that domestic mix now
