‘It’s not as important as a general election’: Londoners on the mayoral election

We ask Londoners how important they think the mayoral election is, and will they even vote?

00:00 On May 2nd, the people of London will vote for the next Mayor of the capital. Current

00:07 Mayor Sadiq Khan is running again for the Labour Party, and has said the election is

00:12 a two horse race between himself and Conservative candidate Susan Hall. Khan recently pledged

00:19 to eliminate homelessness in London by 2030, with Susan Hall claiming it is yet another

00:25 promise he won't deliver. Hall has said she is listening to the people of London throughout

00:31 her campaign. One of her key policies is to scrap Uless. Another candidate that shares

00:37 this view is Howard Cox from the Reform UK Party. The two other more recognisable candidates

00:44 in the London mayoral election are Zoe Garbert for the Greens and the Lib Dems Rob Blackie.

00:50 But now, with the election less than a month away, how important do the people of London

00:55 actually feel this election is, and are they going to vote?

00:59 "Yeah, very important. It's the easiest way we have our say, so, especially for people

01:05 that find it hard to talk about what they believe in and find it hard to protest and

01:10 find it hard to speak up. It's private, it's a good way of expressing what you want, so

01:16 yeah, no, I believe in it, yeah."

01:18 "I'm currently living between London and Edinburgh, so if I'm here in London, I will vote for

01:25 the mayoral election, in the mayoral election, yes."

01:28 "Does a London mayoral election feel as important to you?"

01:32 "Well, I don't think a London mayoral election is as important as a general election, no,

01:37 but I do think it's important, and I would vote in it, you know, as I say, if I'm in

01:43 London, now you're asking me, I might actually look into a post, you know, a remote vote,

01:47 but I hadn't thought about that."

01:49 "Yeah, pretty important. Obviously one person's vote is not going to make any difference,

01:53 But yeah, I'll exercise my right.
