Pro-nuclear 11 member states back declaration at landmark conference

Advocates hailed nuclear power as an enabler of energy security and sovereignty and a reliable option to mitigate climate change.

00:00 Over 30 leaders and delegations from around the world gathered at a nuclear summit in

00:06 Brussels. They are thought to be backing the use of nuclear energy to help achieve the

00:10 goal of a climate neutral globe while giving more countries an added sense of economic

00:15 and security independence as the war in Ukraine lays bare a dependence on Russian energy over

00:22 the past decade.

00:25 The next steps are already taking place in fact and these are the many many projects

00:30 that are being developed in many countries in Europe but also in the global south, in

00:36 China, even in Russia, in the United States, in Canada, in Korea, in Japan where we see

00:43 that nuclear is returning and in a I would say in a very important way, in a very dynamic

00:48 way.

00:49 Germany is not attending the meeting as it switched off its last three nuclear reactors

00:54 almost a year ago, completing a process that received wide political support after Japan's

00:59 Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster in 2011. But some argue for a rethink after energy

01:05 prices spiked because of the war in Ukraine.
