However, the British Medical Association opposed the contract, which stipulated weekend access without guaranteeing availability at patients' regular practices.

Private GPs witnessing a surge in demand have begun charging additional fees for evening and weekend consultations. Mr. Harrison highlighted pharmacies' potential to alleviate pressure on GPs and improve patient access to healthcare, emphasizing the necessity of increased funding. Projections indicate that with adequate funding, the Pharmacy First scheme could potentially release up to 30 million GP appointments annually, equivalent to a month's worth of work.
