German expressionism Synopsis In this film Dreyer introduces us to a ghostly universe through expressionist images. A young traveler, Allan Gray, stays in a strange castle, whose dense and rarefied atmosphere is reminiscent of nightmares. The young man begins to have creepy visions, of which the most terrible is the discovery of an unconscious woman who has been attacked by a vampire in the form of a witch. Master Dreyer films this personal vision of terror in France: a dreamlike and suggestive world, full of ghosts and shadows that captivate more because of the power of the images than because of the terrifying nature of the story. Although it is currently considered a masterpiece of the genre, at the time it was a resounding failure, which is why it would take the Danish director twelve years to reshoot his next film, "Dies Irae."
