getting ready to prepare a coffee shop staple,

Now this frothy green drink might seem a little daunting

to pull off at home, but the truth is,

could not be simpler.

To make sure we got this right, we turned to Soray.

It's a small, elegant shrine dedicated

to premium Japanese teas to make sure we learn the secrets

to the perfect cup of matcha.

Like any solid latte, a matcha latte

is only a couple of ingredients.

You've got your matcha powder, a little bit of sweetener,

and the milk of your choice.

I like almond milk, so that's what we're gonna use,

but you can use whole milk, cashew milk,

whatever will give you a nice little bit of froth on top.

And even with those few ingredients,

one of them is optional.

You don't have to use sweetener,

but it can help take some of that seaweedy edge

off the matcha.

You can use sugar, you can use honey,

whatever sweetener you like,

as long as it'll dissolve into the latte.

Matcha is essentially just green tea,

and it comes in three different varieties.

There's ceremonial matcha, which is the most sought after.

It's silky, it's smooth, and it's known for being

the highest quality of matcha.

But you don't really need to break the bank on it.

It's the most expensive one,

and you don't necessarily need to go

for ceremonial matcha right away.

A step down from the ceremonial grade matcha

is culinary grade matcha.

That's probably what you're gonna find

in most grocery stores,

as long as you trust where you're shopping.

It's perfect for blending into smoothies

or making matcha lattes and everyday drinking.

The lowest tier is what's known as ingredient matcha.

Certainly the most affordable option,

and it's a little bit on the bitter side,

but it's still perfectly fine for culinary uses.

Since making a matcha latte requires so few ingredients,

it's really gonna come down to your technique

and your equipment.

There's three essential pieces of equipment you need

to make an excellent matcha latte at home.

The first is a traditional matcha whisk,

also called a chasen.

It's kinda shaped like a regular whisk

in that it's kind of a balloon shape,

but at the bottom,

you have all these little hooked bamboo frongs.

And what this is used for is combining the matcha

with a little bit of hot liquid

before you add the rest of the liquid to the cup.

This will make sure the matcha is completely dissolved

so you don't run into any large chunks

that are super unpleasant in your final drink.

The second important piece of equipment you're gonna need

is a fine mesh strainer like this one.

This is one you probably already have in your house,

but you wanna make sure the holes are small enough

to where you add the matcha

and it comes out in a fine powder.

You don't want it to come out in big clumps.

The final piece of equipment you're gonna need

to make an awesome cup of matcha latte at home

is a big old mug just like this one,

preferably one with a rounder base than it has a top.

This is similarly shaped to the bowl

that's traditionally used to make matcha,

which is called a chawan,

but this one has a cool little handle,

so we're gonna use this instead.

The reason this is such a big deal

is because it has a nice wide base

for the whisk to really get in there

and work the matcha around.

Honestly, guys, making a matcha latte

is easier than making a regular latte.

Aside from your equipment,

your technique also really matters here.

We're gonna use about 1 1/2 teaspoons of matcha powder.

We're gonna add that to a fine mesh sieve

over top of the mug and gently tap the sieve

until all the matcha has trickled through.

Once you've got all your matcha in the mug,

add whatever sweetener you're using.

After you get your sweetener into the mug,

you wanna take about two tablespoons of hot water,

not boiling, we don't want boiling water, just hot water,

and you're gonna use your matcha whisk to make a paste.

Making that paste is what's gonna help dissolve

the sugar and dissolve the matcha powder,

because again, we don't want any big,

unpleasant seaweedy clumps.

After you've got that paste ready to go,

it's time to start heating up the milk of choice.

I'm going with almond milk

because that's what my tummy will allow,

but you can go with whatever milk you like best.

You can heat it up in the microwave,

you can do it on the stove,

or you can be like me and use a milk frother

on your espresso machine.

Once you've got your milk all heated up and ready to go,

you're gonna add that to the mug with your matcha paste

while whisking, you wanna do it at the same time.

With the whisk, you're gonna make either an M

or a W shape, back and forth.

And that's what's gonna give you that frothy,

vibrant green matcha latte color.

Got most of the milk in my cup already,

and it's smelling really fragrant,

got that grassy, herbaceous smell to it.

I'm really excited to drink this,

but before I do that,

I'm gonna whisk the rest of this milk

until it's a little bit more bubbly,

some of my bubbles die down,

and I wanna be able to spoon some of that froth

so that it looks like a latte,

we want it to have that latte vibe.
