Heavy rain leads to flash flood threats in the South

Intense amounts of rain in the Gulf Coast could cause life-threatening flash floods overnight.

00:00 Very heavy rain continues here across the Gulf Coast region and the severe

00:04 weather threat continues as well this evening, but we're starting to pivot for

00:07 more of a tornado threat to flash flood potential and that's why the Weather

00:11 Prediction Center has a moderate risk across this area, southeastern

00:15 Mississippi through southern Alabama, even extending east of there. Tomorrow

00:19 there could be some excessive rainfall and this is a textbook rainmaker, textbook

00:24 El Nino induced rainmaker. You have a strung out trough, you have very large

00:29 convective bands that are streaming over the same areas dumping very heavy

00:32 rainfall. One to two inch per hour rainfall rates are the story underneath

00:35 this convective band and we did earlier have some tornado warnings earlier today.

00:40 Now though it does seem like the threat is shifting toward more of a heavy rain

00:44 event and then tomorrow across the southeastern US that severe weather

00:48 threat expands central and southern Georgia, South Carolina, low country into

00:52 northern Florida and it looks like a threat of all hazards once again. An

00:55 isolated tornado threat, severe weather, mainly gusty winds, possibly up to 60

01:00 miles an hour and also that heavy rain threat, but the Weather Prediction

01:04 Center has downgraded tomorrow's threat to a slight risk with overnight tonight

01:08 being that significant flood threat really peaking across southern Alabama

01:12 as all of this rain is heading in that direction and some of those rainfall

01:15 totals could be approaching a half a foot in spots in southern Alabama

01:19 tonight, but you still need to stay tuned to those severe weather watches and

01:22 warnings overnight tonight. There still could be an isolated tornado threat as

01:26 that low level jet continues to accelerate during the evening hours, but

01:30 it does look like we're transitioning to more of a rainmaker that could even

01:34 cause some life threatening flash flooding here across the central Gulf
