00:02 The Court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal of former Perak Executive Counsellor

00:07 Paul Yong from conviction for raping his Indonesian maid.

00:10 In a split decision, Justices Hadaria Syed Ismail and Azman Abdullah said

00:15 Yong's appeal was without merit.

00:18 However, they reduced Yong's jail term from 13 years to 8

00:22 but maintained the two strokes of the rotan awarded by the High Court previously.

00:27 Delivering the majority judgment, Azman said Yong's defense was nothing more than an afterthought

00:32 and a bare denial.

00:33 However, Justice S.M. Komati Supia dissented,

00:37 holding that the victim's evidence was not credible.

00:40 She also said Yong did not get a fair trial

00:43 as the defense was not allowed to observe the victim's demeanor and gestures during her testimony.

00:48 In 2022, the Ipoh High Court found Yong guilty of raping his former maid

00:53 in his house in Merudesa Park in 2019.
