SA government target electricity generated by renewable sources

The State Government has pulled forward by three years its target of having "net 100 percent" of South Australia's electricity generated by renewable sources.

00:07 the Premier scaling a tower before committing the state to new heights when it comes to

00:13 renewable energy targets.

00:15 We believe that by 2027 we can be at a target or have reached a target of having 100% net

00:22 renewable energy being produced here in South Australia.

00:26 That's three years earlier than initially planned.

00:29 What it means is that our emissions on a net basis for our electricity production will

00:33 be zero.

00:34 And it doesn't mean the end for gas, which will still be called on when needed.

00:39 Gas fire generation can be an important firming service to actually unlock more renewable

00:44 investment.

00:45 We have to make sure that affordability and reliability for households and businesses

00:49 in South Australia is the number one priority.

00:52 To achieve its new renewable energy target, the government needs more wind turbines to

00:56 be built in SA. It's hoping a new technical college at Port Augusta will help train the

01:01 technicians needed to maintain them.

01:04 The college will also partner with miner BHP to offer specialist courses like mining and

01:09 mineral processing.

01:11 The building that is going to sit here on this abandoned piece of land is going to be

01:14 as good as any technical college in the world. And it will be as good if not better than

01:17 anything that is built in any metropolitan part of our state.

01:21 We cannot operate without new people joining the industry.

01:25 Classes set to start at the college next year.
