Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely this
00:06
afternoon to speak to Rebecca Threw, a playwright in Worthing. You've got your third play coming
00:11
up very soon, 'A Suspense for Two-Handed Barmaids', which is being performed February 29th at
00:19
the Cellar Arts Club. Now, Rebecca, what kind of play are we talking about here? Because
00:24
suspense seems to be a bit of a theme in your work, doesn't it?
00:29
Absolutely. I really like the, just two people sort of coming together and trying to figure
00:36
each other out. It's all about the dialogue. That's how I like my plays to be.
00:42
And these two people coming together, have they got reasons to be rather wary of each
00:46
other then?
00:47
They do a bit. Mia, who runs the pub, she's sort of very straight-laced, she likes everything
00:54
just as it is, in order. And Bianca comes in and she's quite chaotic and sort of, you
01:00
know, lives in a crazy world. And these two women sort of collide.
01:06
It sounds intriguing. Now you've written, you are directing, you are promoting, you're
01:10
doing virtually everything apart from being in it. Why don't you want to be in your own
01:15
place?
01:16
Because I'm an awful actress and I'll probably forget my lines. So I wouldn't want to ruin
01:21
the play. I've spent a long time writing it.
01:23
Those are excellent reasons for not being in it. Now this is play number three in a
01:27
relatively short time, isn't it? And what unlocked it for you was going on a playwriting
01:32
course?
01:33
Yes, yes. In Brighton last year.
01:35
What did that give you then?
01:38
Just the opportunity to sort of see what I can do and then bring it home to Worthing.
01:43
Yeah. So it must be so satisfying that you're now doing that for the third time.
01:48
Yeah, definitely. And a bit scary.
01:52
And where do you want the playwriting to go?
01:55
I just would like people to come and just be entertained. Just perform at different
02:01
venues in Worthing and just give the town something different to do.
02:05
Yeah. So two last year. February will be the first for this year. Are there others lined
02:10
up for the rest of this year?
02:13
Yes. My aim is to have six new plays written this year.
02:17
Wow. That is ambitious, isn't it?
02:20
Yes. So Barmaid's is the first. The second one's called Who Killed Florence? And that's
02:26
being performed next month. And then, yeah, I need to get my writing on and do the rest.
02:32
Fantastic. Well, good luck with everything. Lovely to speak to you. And congratulations
02:36
on number three.
02:37
Thank you.
02:38
Thanks.
