00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspaper. It's really

00:06lovely to speak to Alice Rowell this afternoon. Alice, you are with Hay Odds in Horsham for

00:11the latest production, Little Shop of Horrors, and the lovely thing is you go back a long

00:15way with the company, don't you? You started at the age of 11 and you stayed. What makes

00:22this company so special, do you think?

00:25It's just one big family. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and we love being all

00:32with each other in and out of rehearsal and it just makes doing the show so much fun.

00:37And it sounds like you've had some fabulous opportunities with the company. You particularly

00:42enjoyed Hairspray, didn't you?

00:45I did, yes, in November 23. That was a really fun show. It was my first sort of slightly

00:50bigger part and I had a lot of fun doing all the dancing, the harmonies and all the dance, yeah.

01:00That sounds great. And this current show, Little Shop of Horrors, you are playing Audrey,

01:06which is a key role by The Sound of Things.

01:08Yes, it's my first leading role. I'm very excited about it. I've been working towards

01:14it for a long time and it's very exciting that it's now come to fruition. And it's just

01:20with the best cast and creative team.

01:25What kind of character is Audrey then? What do you have to be to be authentically Audrey,

01:29do you think?

01:30Audrey starts off quite vulnerable. She isn't from the best background. She's been in a

01:37few abusive relationships. But you see her journey through the show, trying to find out

01:44what she wants from life and really coming into her own. And it's just a joy to play

01:50that journey.

01:51And first leading role, that's quite something.

01:55Yes. I've been auditioned for quite a few leading roles before, but it's not been quite

02:02my time before, but it feels like it's my time.

02:04So a lot more change, do you think, than now was your time? Is it a question of your confidence?

02:09I think it takes a long time to maybe just develop your own creative craft and your performance

02:17skills. And I've had plenty of shows to do that and I'm really just excited to let rip.

02:26Absolutely. It was fantastic to think of it as not just individual shows, but it's a kind

02:31of progression, isn't it, and development. But why do you do this thing? What is it that

02:35you get out of appearing on stage?

02:38It's just, you feel so fulfilled after doing a show. You get the audience feedback from

02:46all the applause and sending ovations. It really makes you feel so good. And knowing

02:50you're doing it with just your best friends is fantastic.

02:54Because Hales is so famously a friendly company, isn't it? Which is your experience right from

02:59the start?

03:00Yes. Yeah. Right from the start, when I joined in 2007, it was just a lovely group of people

03:07and I didn't want to leave.

03:09And you haven't. Well, congratulations on the first leading role. I hope it goes brilliantly.
