Miracle baby Arley-James: from one pound survivor to first birthday celebrant

Miracle baby Arley-James Hughes was born four months early and only weighed one pound and was not expected to survive, today he's celebrating his first birthday.

00:00 We're celebrating because Ali was born extremely premature at 22 weeks gestation.

00:05 He's turning one tomorrow on the 20th February and I think we should celebrate his little

00:12 life and all his accomplishments that he's had so far.

00:15 He's overcome endocarditis, various different infections in hospital due to long lines and

00:21 other things that are required just because he's in hospital really.

00:26 He had ROP in both eyes which is due to prematurity.

00:30 It's gone, resolved.

00:31 He had a bleed to the brain times two, both resolved.

00:34 He's had inguinal hernias in his groin which he's had to have an operation on and he's

00:40 done well on that as well.

00:42 Everything, he's had endocarditis which is a 75% mortality rate for an adult that's healthy.

00:48 When he was four weeks old he was told to make funeral arrangements.

00:52 I said absolutely not.

00:55 Thankfully a doctor came with a new wonder drug that they've never tried called microfungin,

00:59 asked if we could try it and I said well what have we got to lose really?

01:04 So he did that six weeks later after having four types of antibiotics throughout the day

01:08 for that amount of time.

01:10 He's overcome that.

01:12 Miracle, his consultants, doctors, nurses are all amazed that he's made it.

01:17 So yeah, little superstar right here.

01:19 He's here for a purpose definitely.

01:22 He's been up and down, they said when he first arrived it was going to be a rollercoaster

01:26 and my god has it been that.

01:28 But we've had great support, even now when we're at home we have the community nurses

01:32 that come out to him.

01:33 So we've constantly assurance, good family unit around us as well so always supported

01:39 in every aspect.

01:40 Great.

01:41 He likes food so we're going to take him in to get his photos done and have a meal afterwards

01:47 because as I say he likes to eat.

01:51 And that's it really.

01:53 Just like to feed him.
