00:00 You have an important story to tell that so many people can relate to, right?
00:02 We're all connected by love and loss.
00:04 Yes.
00:04 And, you know, that's what's so amazing about this project now.
00:07 Because this is me then, I mean, that was released over 20 years ago.
00:10 And I know you said there wasn't a plan to do a follow-up, right?
00:12 No.
00:13 Like two decades later.
00:14 So what was it like reflecting back on that time and then reuniting with Ben
00:18 and being inspired to do more music?
00:20 Yeah, I mean, that's exactly what happened.
00:22 When Ben and I got back together, it was just like,
00:26 I want to make music again.
00:27 I want to get back in the studio.
00:28 I was very, very inspired.
00:30 And when I think about, I was like, the same way this is me then,
00:33 captured that moment in time without me realizing it.
00:36 The first time we kind of fell in love, I wanted to capture this moment in time.
00:40 Once the music was done, it felt so special to me.
00:44 It felt like something very different than I had ever done.
00:48 Even though I've written about love my whole career
00:52 and sang about it and everything, this was something different.
00:55 This was something a little bit more evolved and healed and kind of magical.
00:59 And so I wanted to do something special to go along with it.
01:03 [MUSIC - "I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU BOY"]
01:05 (SINGING) I'm still in love with you boy.
01:11 Third time's the charm.
01:12 This guy don't stand a chance.
01:13 I loved how much you were able to laugh at yourself, poke fun at your past,
01:18 even the media scrutiny of the past, which feels like almost cathartic.
01:22 Was it for you?
01:24 It was.
01:24 But it was also a very vulnerable place to be all the time.
01:28 It's like half the time I was thinking, this is amazing.
01:31 I'm so excited that I'm doing this.
01:33 And then half of the time I was like, why are you doing this?
01:36 You are so crazy.
01:37 Because you're baring your soul.
01:38 Yeah.
01:39 Yeah.
01:40 But I think that's what being an artist is about.
01:43 You have to.
01:43 You have to.
01:44 That's the difference between being an artist and not being an artist.
01:49 It's like, how vulnerable can you get?
01:51 How much can you bear your soul?
01:53 And that's not an easy thing as humans.
01:56 It's never enough for you.
01:57 He's a liar.
01:58 I've never lied to you.
01:59 The constant criticism.
02:00 She thinks I'm her employee.
02:02 Being with you feels like home.
02:05 But I left home for a reason.
02:07 The cameos with Jane Fonda, Kiki Palmer, Derek Hough.
02:09 I mean, was it deliberate to kind of almost do
02:11 this visual retrospective of your life and your career?
02:15 Yeah, it's funny.
02:16 The Zodiacs were really meant to kind of represent
02:20 the people in our lives who are always commenting,
02:23 whether your mom or your friends or your aunts or your co-workers
02:27 or your whatever.
02:28 And it was a really kind of fun way to do that.
02:31 And I was lucky to get all of the people that--
02:35 I really loved their philosophies on life and love and their music
02:40 and everything.
02:41 To be able to get them in there, they were all very special,
02:44 heartful, spiritual people that I chose,
02:47 who were all very, very different.
02:49 And funny.
02:51 Super funny.
02:51 So good.
02:52 Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up,
02:57 my answer was always in love.
03:02 And that's what I took away from this project.
03:04 And the record, too, is that it's not really
03:06 just about this epic love story.
03:08 It's about self-love, too.
03:09 No, yeah.
03:10 In this healing journey, right?
03:11 Yeah, it's very different than that.
03:12 Like, I had to kind of make this other musical experience
03:15 to go with it because it didn't tell the whole story.
03:17 Because if you think about "This Is Me Then,"
03:19 you think about "This Is Me Now," there was 18,
03:22 20 years between those two moments.
03:24 That being said, what would Jennifer now tell Jennifer then?
03:28 I think I would say knowing what I know now is very difficult, right?
03:32 Because I would say, oh my god, it's going to be better than you ever thought.
03:35 You know?
03:36 I feel like just believe.
03:42 Don't give up.
03:44 I mean, on that note, I know you didn't choose this life
03:47 to represent Latinos ever.
03:49 But if I never get the chance to tell you,
03:51 thank you for being a forever constant source of inspiration for us.
03:54 Because watching your success and your story,
03:57 it's like there's no dream that's too big.
03:59 And today you watched mine come true just sitting here with you.
04:01 Aw, thank you.
04:02 Thank you so, so much.
04:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:07 you
