Hundreds cross Newcastle coal port for open water swim

Hundreds of keen swimmers have crossed the world's busiest coal port for Newcastle's traditional open water swim. Some of them were a bit dazed getting out of the water after navigating choppy conditions.

00:05 Normally that's a pretty bad idea because this is the world's busiest coal port.

00:10 Normally there are massive bulkers going back and forth here at all times of day taking

00:14 coal all over the world.

00:16 But on Australia Day they take a break allowing hundreds of swimmers to cross the river.

00:21 Some just go once, others like to go back and forth.

00:24 It's pretty popular and it's one of Australia's richest open water swims.

00:28 It was a bit rough, really high waves.

00:30 Yeah it was tough to do it, first time on water so not too bad.

00:34 Yeah it was tough but a lot of chop but it was good yeah.

00:38 Big sleep and it was just hard to kind of figure out where you were going.

00:43 I was just following the boys mainly.

00:46 I've drunk so much salt water out there I'm incredibly dehydrated.
