00:12 We don't really like to talk about them,

00:14 but they're an integral part of our lives.

00:17 Billion-dollar industries have been built around them.

00:20 People have become addicted to them.

00:25 And scientists have studied them for eons.

00:29 While there's still a level of mystery surrounding them,

00:32 some experts believe that orgasms

00:35 were designed to keep humans reproducing.

00:38 So what would happen if we stopped having them?

00:56 Without orgasms, sex would become a practical act,

01:00 like working out.

01:01 And just like working out,

01:04 people might quickly become bored with it,

01:06 which could cause a global decline in birth rates.

01:10 But that's just the beginning.

01:12 Without orgasms, we'd be less healthy,

01:15 our education system would change,

01:17 and our environment would get a much-needed boost.

01:20 How can this small physical reaction

01:22 have so much control over our world?

01:26 If none of us were able to experience orgasms,

01:29 do we really know the extent of what we'd be missing?

01:33 Well, during orgasm,

01:34 your brain shifts most of its resources

01:37 to achieve one goal - pleasure.

01:40 One sector of the brain produces oxytocin,

01:42 a hormone that helps coordinate arousal.

01:45 Another sector digs deep to bring together

01:48 all your touch sensors,

01:49 sexual fantasies, and memories.

01:52 Other parts of the brain provide a handful

01:54 of feel-good hormones and neurochemicals,

01:56 most notably dopamine.

01:59 Mix that all together and...

02:02 You've got something so good

02:03 that it's been compared to trying heroin for the first time.

02:07 And just like heroin,

02:08 it can lead to plenty of bad decisions.

02:12 Not only do orgasms feel good,

02:14 but they're actually good for us too.

02:17 They can act as painkillers.

02:19 They can reduce menstrual cramps,

02:21 improve circulation,

02:22 fight aging,

02:23 boost your immune system,

02:25 and even help you live longer.

02:28 Over a 10-year study,

02:29 men who had two or more orgasms per week

02:32 had a 50% lower mortality risk

02:35 than those who experienced fewer happy endings.

02:38 Similar results were found with women.

02:40 But if orgasms didn't exist,

02:42 it wouldn't only be these individual benefits

02:44 that we'd be missing out on.

02:46 Our society as a whole would be impacted too.

02:50 Some couples would keep procreating

02:53 because it's what the human body is programmed to do.

02:56 But with no pleasure involved in the process,

02:59 the birth rate would take a significant dive.

03:02 And if you weren't trying to make babies,

03:04 chances are that sex would become kind of boring.

03:08 Who wants to run a race

03:09 where you can never make it to the finish line?

03:12 With less time daydreaming and fantasizing about sex,

03:15 teens would probably do better in school.

03:18 The dynamics of dating and relationships

03:20 would completely change,

03:22 and things like one-night stands would cease to exist.

03:27 With each new post-orgasm generation,

03:29 life on the planet would look increasingly different.

03:33 Economies would shift with fewer children,

03:36 housing markets would be affected as demand declines,

03:39 and schools would suffer as enrollment numbers would drop

03:42 with the decreasing population.

03:44 It wouldn't all be terrible news though.

03:47 With a decrease in population growth,

03:49 we might see some benefits for the planet,

03:51 since there would be fewer people polluting it

03:53 and depleting its resources.

03:55 Life on planet Earth might feel a little more focused,

03:59 perhaps even a little boring.

04:01 Maybe one day, we'd grow so bored with sex

04:04 that all of our procreation

04:06 would come through artificial insemination.
